Postdoc Python information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc Python, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc Python, you need a PhD in a relevant field, strong research experience, and advanced proficiency in Python programming. Familiarity with data analysis libraries (like NumPy, pandas, and SciPy), version control systems (such as Git), and computational tools is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication help differentiate outstanding candidates in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments. These skills ensure that complex research projects are executed efficiently, reproducibly, and with meaningful scientific contributions.

What are some common challenges postdoctoral researchers face when working with Python in academic research?

Postdoctoral researchers using Python often encounter challenges such as integrating Python with legacy codebases written in other languages, managing complex dependencies and environments, and ensuring reproducibility of research results. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams may also require adapting code for different data formats and computational needs. Staying up-to-date with the latest Python libraries and best practices is crucial, as is documenting code so that it can be easily understood and used by other researchers.

What does a Postdoc Python do?

A Postdoc Python is a postdoctoral researcher who specializes in using the Python programming language for scientific research, data analysis, or software development. They typically work in academic or research settings, contributing to ongoing projects, developing computational tools, and publishing their findings. Their work may involve collaborating with other scientists, mentoring students, and advancing research through innovative coding and data analysis techniques. Proficiency in Python allows them to tackle complex problems in fields like bioinformatics, physics, engineering, and more.

What is the difference between Postdoc Python vs Data Scientist?

AspectPostdoc PythonData Scientist
Required CredentialsPhD or equivalent in relevant field, strong Python skillsBachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field; Python skills often required
Work EnvironmentAcademic or research institutions, labsCorporate, tech companies, consulting firms
Industry UsageResearch projects, academic publicationsBusiness analytics, product development, data-driven decision making
Common Search/ComparisonPostdoc Python vs Data Scientist

While both roles require strong Python skills, a Postdoc Python typically focuses on research and academic projects, often requiring a PhD. In contrast, a Data Scientist applies Python in industry settings to analyze data, build models, and support business goals. The work environment and career paths differ, with Postdocs leaning toward academia and Data Scientists toward industry roles.

Job description

Postdoctoral Associate
Job no: 539450
Work type: Post Doc Associate
Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Categories: Medicine/Physicians
Department:29030101 - MD-BIOCHEMISTRY-GENERAL
Classification Title:
Postdoctoral Associate
Classification Minimum Requirements:
The appointee shall have received the doctorate in a field appropriate to the assigned duties and responsibilities.
Job Description:
The Nemudryi Lab is recruiting postdoctoral researchers for two research projects:
Project 1: Molecular Mechanisms of Phage Defense
Bacteriophages impose intense selective pressure on bacteria, driving the evolution of diverse immune systems. Our recent work demonstrated that homologs of human antiviral Schlafen tRNases function as anti-phage defense proteins in bacteria (Perez Taboada et al., Nature Microbiology 2026). We are now investigating how these systems detect viral infection and activate nuclease effectors.
Current directions include:
  • Structural and biochemical analysis of viral trigger recognition
  • Mechanisms of immune activation
  • Reconstitution of immune complexes in vitro
  • Computational prediction of novel defense systems

We welcome applicants with backgrounds in structural biology, computational biology, protein biochemistry, enzymology, microbiology, or related fields.
Project 2: RNA Repair and Programmable RNA Editing
How cells respond to RNA damage remains poorly understood. While RNA is often assumed to be degraded upon damage, our recent work demonstrated that human cells can repair RNA breaks generated by CRISPR ribonucleases and that this pathway can be harnessed for programmable RNA deletions (Nemudraia, Nemudryi & Wiedenheft, Science, 2024). Ongoing work aims to define the molecular mechanisms of RNA repair and develop new RNA editing approaches.
Current directions include:
  • Biochemical characterization of RNA ligases and repair enzymes
  • Transcriptome-wide analysis of RNA repair
  • Development of CRISPR-based RNA-targeting tools

Applicants with expertise in RNA biology, CRISPR systems, or transcriptomics are encouraged to apply.
Lab Environment: The lab combines genetic, biochemical, molecular, and computational approaches. We value mechanistic rigor, scientific curiosity, independence, and collaborative science. Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to develop projects that position themselves for independent careers.
Expected Salary:
$60,000 - $65,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology, genetics, or related.
Preferred:
  • Strong computational and analytical skills; experience with Python or R is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment

Special Instructions to Applicants:
To be considered, please submit the following:
  • Cover letter summarizing research experience and interests (indicating project preference)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Contact information for three professional references.

Application must be submitted by 11:55 p.m. (ET) of the posting end date.
Health Assessment Required:No
Advertised: 08 Apr 2026 Eastern Daylight Time
Applications close: 30 Jun 2026 Eastern Daylight Time

About University of Florida

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
