What is a Computational Design job?

A Computational Design job involves using algorithms, programming, and digital tools to create and optimize designs across various disciplines such as architecture, engineering, and product design. Professionals in this field leverage parametric modeling, generative design, and automation to enhance efficiency and innovation. They often work with software like Grasshopper, Dynamo, Python, or machine learning frameworks to solve complex design challenges. This role blends creativity with technical expertise to develop smarter, data-driven design solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computational Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Computational Design, a strong background in mathematics, programming, and design principles is essential, often supported by a degree in architecture, engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in software tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper, Python, MATLAB, and CAD platforms is typically required, along with relevant certifications in parametric or generative design if available. Strong problem-solving skills, creative thinking, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams help candidates excel in this position. Mastery of these skills enables the creation of innovative, efficient solutions for complex design challenges and facilitates effective teamwork within fast-moving project environments.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Computational Design?

A typical day in Computational Design involves using specialized software to develop, test, and refine design algorithms that solve spatial or structural problems. You might collaborate with architects, engineers, or product designers to create digital prototypes, analyze performance data, and implement feedback for iterative improvement. Much of the work is project-based and requires frequent teamwork and meetings to align goals and ensure smooth integration of computational solutions into larger projects. Expect a dynamic environment where problem-solving and creativity are highly valued, and learning opportunities are ongoing as you stay up-to-date with new tools and methods.

Job description

Your Role

As a Senior Project Architect in our Atlanta office, you will lead the technical execution, documentation, and delivery of interior architecture projects across all phases-from concept through construction. You bring deep expertise in building systems, detailing, code compliance, and consultant coordination, ensuring that design intent is fully translated into highperforming, buildable solutions.

You excel in technical problemsolving, project delivery, Revit leadership, and quality assurance, and you work closely with designers, engineers, and clients to deliver precise, integrated outcomes.

What You Will Do

  • Lead technical development, documentation, and detailing throughout all project phases, ensuring coordinated, highquality drawing sets.
  • Oversee Revit workflows, model integrity, drawing standards, and quality control reviews, driving consistency and efficiency across project teams.
  • Direct consultant coordination (MEP, structural, AV/IT, lighting, sustainability, etc.) and ensure fully integrated technical solutions.
  • Evaluate design options against constructability, codes, building performance, and budget constraints, proactively resolving technical challenges.
  • Serve as a point of contact for clients and project partners, communicating technical strategies and resolving executionrelated issues.
  • Guide teams in the application of materials, systems, specifications, and FF&E to ensure performance and compliance.
  • Lead construction administration activities, including submittal review, RFIs, site observations, and fieldissue resolution.
  • Integrate advanced digital tools (Revit, Enscape, computational design, AR/VR) to support design analysis and technical delivery.
  • Mentor team members in best practices for detailing, documentation standards, and project delivery excellence.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
  • 6-10 years of interior architecture experience with emphasis on technical execution, documentation, and project delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience functioning on multidisciplinary teams and delivering coordinated construction documents.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Expert proficiency in Revit; proficiency with SketchUp, InDesign, 3ds Max, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Miro preferred.
  • Registered/Licensed Architect (if you are in the process of taking AREs, feel free to contact nicole_kumar@gensler.com to determine whether another opening could be a match for your background)
  • LEED, Fitwell or WELL accreditation is preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to resilience and sustainable building practices; Portfolios will ideally include at least one project (especially built projects with LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel, and/or Net Zero Building certification) with this particular focus, which we look forward to discussing during the interview

Please include a portfolio that highlights technical documentation, detailing quality, and built project experience along with your resume.

This role is not remote or hybrid; we look forward to working with our new team member in our dynamic Atlanta office.
