Job description

As an IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and supporting the technology infrastructure that powers Zimmerman’s business operations. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will help develop innovative and scalable solutions to meet the organization's evolving infrastructure requirements while ensuring the highest levels of performance, reliability, and security.

This position is responsible for the implementation, administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of enterprise infrastructure systems across a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth and optimization of Zimmerman’s data center, cloud, storage, networking, and virtualization platforms, ensuring that critical business services remain highly available and resilient.

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical expertise and a passion for infrastructure engineering, with demonstrated experience in designing, testing, validating, and supporting enterprise-class hardware and virtualization environments. They should be well-versed in infrastructure lifecycle management, industry best practices, and emerging technologies, with the ability to evaluate and implement solutions that enhance operational efficiency and business outcomes.

This role requires a collaborative professional who can effectively partner with internal stakeholders, vendors, and business leaders to continuously improve infrastructure services, drive operational excellence, and support the organization’s long-term technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full scope of server infrastructure, including network connectivity, power delivery, and overall system functionality within production and data center environments.
  • Design, implement, and maintain a scalable and resilient VMware virtualization environment to support enterprise-wide workloads and business-critical applications.
  • Lead end-to-end hardware development initiatives, managing project timelines, stakeholder coordination, and delivery from initial concept through final production deployment.
  • Execute and support data center deployments, while proactively troubleshooting and resolving production issues to ensure high availability and operational stability.
  • Partner with engineering teams and hardware vendors to design, build, and sustain purpose-built server solutions with a strong focus on resilience, scalability, and fault tolerance.
  • Identify performance improvements and implement optimizations across large-scale virtual machine environments supporting critical enterprise applications.
  • Collaborate closely with internal Zimmerman stakeholders to gather requirements, optimize costs, and translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Drive the hardware procurement lifecycle, including architectural planning, product requirements definition, vendor evaluation, and deployment coordination through operational handoff.
  • Develop, review, and execute validation plans while overseeing test processes and reporting across hardware, firmware, and system software domains.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex hardware and system-level issues down to component and firmware levels, working cross-functionally to ensure resolution and system integrity.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms, including tools used to monitor, measure, manage, and control data center utilization and performance.
  • Industry-recognized certifications in IT infrastructure disciplines, such as CompTIA Server+, CompTIA Network+, or Cisco CCNP.
  • Proven experience working with diverse hardware vendor architectures in enterprise or large-scale infrastructure environments.
  • Hands-on experience managing the full lifecycle of large-scale VMware environments, including deployment, optimization, patching, and operational support.
  • Exposure to board-level hardware design and validation processes, including testing and troubleshooting at the component level.
  • Strong systems administration experience across both Linux and Windows server operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of power distribution systems and subsystems within data center environments, including redundancy and resiliency design principles.
  • Exceptional analytical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve complex, multi-layered technical issues.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in after-hours on-call rotations and provide responsive support for critical operational incidents.
