The non-sterile compounding technician is responsible for creating compounded medication under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist. The duties of a non-sterile compounding technician include, but not limited to, receiving medication orders, measuring quantities, mixing ingredients, packaging medication, and updating records.

What You'll Do
  • Completes compounding and other pharmacy records as indicated.
  • Weighs, measures, and mixes raw material ingredients, monitors agitation, heating and cooling temperatures, and other parameters to ensure finished batches of tablets meet specifications.
  • Transfers materials into properly labeled, approved containers.
  • Cleans and sanitizes equipment and completes all required documentation to maintain compliance with USP <795> (non-sterile compounding) and company's Quality System.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of USP <795> guidelines.
  • Prepares labels and picks in accordance with the dispensing order.
  • Prepares both prepackaged and unit dose drugs in accordance with the dispensing order.
  • Prepares and generates batches for preparation of non-sterile mixtures.
  • Organizes assigned workload to facilitate its accomplishment.
  • Ensures that the compounding room and related equipment are cleaned and maintained per organizational policy and procedures.
  • Participates with the pharmacist and pharmacy manager in monitoring/maintaining drug inventories and preparing orders for drugs and related supplies.
  • Participates in department QA activities as requested
  • Follow Safety Data Sheet (SDS) guidelines for maintaining safety and managing safety events.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Properly clean up hazardous medication spills utilizing established safety protocols.
  • Safely dispose of hazardous wastes generated during medication preparation.
  • Routinely check for outdated or soon to expire chemicals and compounded products.
  • Use proper garbing techniques in accordance with SOP guidelines.
  • Effectively prepare and organize all compounded products for pharmacist review.
  • Work closely with the Quality Assurance Department to ensure product sterility, potency and absence of endotoxins.
  • Assists pharmacists and pharmacists-in-charge perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Obtain Pharmacy Technician License
  • Obtain Pharmacy Technician Certification within 6 months of hire
  • Compounding and/or Laboratory experience
  • Capable of wearing all protective wear as required. This includes, but not limited to, masks, gloves, gowns, hair net, safety goggles, etc.
  • Ability to operate computer and laboratory equipment
  • Detail Oriented
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Experience in a fast pace working environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic principles, theories and laws, policies and procedures that pertain to compounding
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Tableting and/or Encapsulating experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a team to achieve goals around safety, quality, and delivery
  • Ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to perform rudimentary mathematical calculations as related to compounding
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Effective problem-solving skills

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work on your feet for an 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to repetitively use hands, wrist, and arms to perform job duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of force in order to lift, carry, pull and/or move objects as required.

Work Environment:
  • This is a full-time, in-office and in-lab position based at our Elmhurst compounding pharmacyfacility (5 days per week).
