Position Description
Looking for a launchpad to start your civil engineering career?
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an organized, detail-oriented professional to join our Project Management and Controls Division as an Assistant Project Manager. This entry-level role is a premier launchpad for a career in civil engineering and infrastructure delivery, offering the chance to support critical capital projects-from watermain replacements to essential drainage upgrades to addressing facility needs. Working alongside experienced project managers, you will gain hands-on experience in field documentation, permitting, vendor coordination, and compliance tracking. This position reports to the Project Manager.

Job Responsibilities
  • Coordinate permitting timelines and assist in preparing documentation for review and submittal.
  • Communicate with permitting agencies, internal teams, and external vendors to support project delivery.
  • Help onboard vendors, track contracts, and assist with invoice processing.
  • Collect, organize, and upload field data, photos, and inspection logs.
  • Attend project meetings, take notes, and follow up on action items.
  • Maintain internal schedules, trackers, and compliance documentation systems.
  • Support construction closeout's by organizing records and ensuring documentation is complete.
  • Assist with multiple projects across SPU's water, drainage, and wastewater portfolios.

Qualifications
Education:
Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Experience/Education Equivalency:
In lieu of an associate's degree in an accredited program, two (2) additional years of civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted.
Or: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.
Licenses or Certificates: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Additional Information
A combination of the following qualifications would be desired, but are not a requirement.

Workplace Environment/Physical Demands:
  • This position works in an office location and may occasionally require field visits to other facilities and project sites.
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office a minimum of three days per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their manager.
