Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a Solid Waste Engineer or Civil / Environmental Engineer with solid waste landfill design and/or experience contributing to alternative waste processing and renewable energy projects in waste including anaerobic digestion and composting facilities to join our team in the US Central Region. This role can be based in Chicago, IL, Des Moines, IA, Houston, TX, Omaha, NE, or St. Paul, MN. This is an exciting opportunity for an early to mid-career professional seeking new opportunities and challenges working with public and private clients.
Projects envisioned for the employee filling this role include solid waste planning, landfill design, stormwater design, anaerobic digestion, compost systems, and specification development and review, leading client conversations, training staff or serve as field construction monitor, regulatory reporting and permitting, cost estimate development, and many appurtenant tasks that arise from these projects. This is a role leading to increased responsibility over time including technical and client relationship development. Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
  • Contract Management: Deliver required outcomes by coordinating activities of subcontractors and suppliers and acting as a primary point of contact for them while working within an established contract management plan.
  • Improvement/Innovation: Identify shortcomings in existing processes, systems, and procedures, and use established change management programs to address them.
  • Engineering Standards Specification: Carry out a range of activities under the guidance of more senior colleagues to support the drafting of engineering standards and specifications and the evaluation of the effectiveness of those standards.
  • Knowledge Management System: Helping others get the most out of knowledge management systems by offering support and advice.
  • Engineering Inspections: Carry out inspections independently or under the supervision of senior colleagues to evaluate the quality of engineering works and/or the integrity of existing installations or structures, and make recommendations to senior colleagues on the remedial works needed to ensure conformance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Help senior colleagues manage client and customer relationships by using relevant sales or client systems.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collate and analyze data using preset tools, methods, and formats. Involves working independently.
  • Engineering Drawings: Oversee engineering drawing development to support the communication, evaluation, and implementation of solid waste management solutions.
  • Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
  • Project Management: Work within an established project management structure for project delivery while promoting and collaborating across GHD.
  • Research: Carry out a range of research activities either to support others or to fulfill the requirements of the role.

What you'll bring to the team (Education/Experience):
  • A college engineering degree is required
  • PE registration or ability to obtain PE within 2 years
  • Minimum of two years of consulting engineer experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including some overnights, as needed
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to conduct site visits and inspections over potentially rugged terrain
  • OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER training a plus

  • Paid time off - Our PTO benefit is designed to provide eligible employees with a period of rest and relaxation, sick, and personal time throughout the year. PTO starts at 16 days per year and increases with years of service
  • Holiday Pay - Holiday pay is provided for eligible employees. GHD observes 9 holidays per year. Holiday pay will be based on the regular set schedule for the employee
  • Wellness Benefit- Regular full-term employees are eligible to participate in the wellness reimbursement program. GHD will reimburse 50% of the cost of the following to maximum of $250.00 reimbursement annually for such items as: Health club membership fees, Home exercise equipment purchases, Bicycles, Race, run & marathon entrance fees, Smoking cessation programs, Weight loss programs (i.e.-Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig), Fitbits and Fitness Tracking devices

Salary Range: $65,000.00 - $108,000.00 based on experience and location.
