What is compliance testing?

Compliance testing is the process of evaluating systems, processes, or products to ensure they meet specific regulatory, industry, or internal standards. The goal is to verify that an organization is following applicable laws, regulations, and policies to avoid legal penalties or operational risks. This type of testing is common in industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology, where non-compliance can have significant consequences. Compliance testers use checklists, audits, and various assessment tools to systematically check adherence and document findings for remediation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a compliance testing professional?

To thrive in Compliance Testing, you need a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, risk assessment, and testing methodologies, typically supported by a degree in finance, law, or a related field. Familiarity with compliance management systems, data analytics tools, and certifications such as Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with stakeholders. These competencies ensure that organizations adhere to regulations, mitigate risks, and maintain operational integrity.

What are some common challenges faced in a compliance testing role, and how can applicants prepare to address them?

Professionals in Compliance Testing often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulations, interpreting complex compliance requirements, and ensuring thorough documentation. Additionally, coordinating with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions can require strong communication and negotiation skills. Applicants can prepare by staying updated on industry regulations, developing a detail-oriented mindset, and gaining experience with audit processes or relevant compliance software. Demonstrating adaptability and proactive learning will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

Job description

This role sits at the intersection of compliance, security engineering, and AI-driven automation. You will serve as a subject matter expert for compliance programs supporting Amazon Foundational Security Services (AFSS), working closely with engineering teams and external auditors to ensure our services meet the highest bar for security assurance.
A significant and growing part of this role involves identifying and implementing AI-powered solutions to automate compliance workflows. You will be expected to get hands-on with AI tooling-building agents, leveraging large language models, and eliminating manual processes. This is not a "future-state" aspiration; it is a core expectation of the role from day one.
This role requires familiarity with compliance in government cloud environments, including air-gapped (isolated) cloud regions. You will support FedRAMP authorization efforts and understand the unique compliance challenges of operating security services in environments with no connectivity to commercial regions.
A key priority for this role is leading the automation of compliance testing and documentation in partnership with Security Assurance. You will drive the modernization of how compliance artifacts are created, maintained, and managed-moving away from manual processes toward automated, scalable solutions that serve as the source of compliance truth across AFSS.
You will dive deep into security technologies such as access control design patterns, identity security services, authorization, authentication, and lifecycle management to support our customers as Amazon continues to scale and grow.
