How much do complex systems modeling jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for complex systems modeling in the United States is $124,732.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,500.00 and $143,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced when working in Complex Systems Modeling, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Complex Systems Modeling often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of data, ensuring the accuracy of simulations, and integrating multidisciplinary perspectives. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with subject matter experts, regular validation of models against real-world data, and adopting advanced computational tools. Additionally, effective communication within cross-functional teams is essential for interpreting results and refining models. Staying current with industry best practices and continuing education can also help overcome these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Complex Systems Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Complex Systems Modeler, you need a strong background in mathematics, systems theory, and computational modeling, often supported by an advanced degree in engineering, physics, or related fields. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB, AnyLogic, or Simulink), programming languages (like Python or R), and data analysis tools is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable modelers to build accurate representations of intricate systems and provide actionable insights for decision-making.

What is complex systems modeling?

Complex systems modeling is the process of using mathematical, computational, or conceptual models to understand and predict the behavior of systems with many interconnected parts. These systems often exhibit emergent properties, meaning the whole system behaves in ways not obvious from its individual components. Examples include climate systems, ecosystems, social networks, and economic markets. By modeling these systems, researchers and analysts can explore scenarios, identify patterns, and inform decision-making in fields ranging from engineering to public policy.

What is the difference between Complex Systems Modeling vs Data Analyst?

AspectComplex Systems ModelingData Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in systems engineering, computer science, or related fields; knowledge of modeling softwareDegree in statistics, mathematics, or related fields; proficiency in data analysis tools
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering firms, or tech companies focusing on system simulationsBusiness, finance, or healthcare settings analyzing data trends
Industry UsageEngineering, technology, research institutionsBusiness, finance, healthcare, marketing

Complex Systems Modeling involves creating simulations of interconnected systems to analyze behavior and predict outcomes, often requiring specialized modeling skills. Data Analysts focus on interpreting data sets to inform decision-making, using statistical tools. While both roles analyze complex information, modeling emphasizes system simulation, whereas data analysis centers on data interpretation.

Job description

Systems Design Engineer, Factory Systems Modeling

We are seeking a Systems Design Engineer to develop models for our battery refining and materials production processes. You'll apply first-principles modeling in custom software to create plant-scale models that maximize efficiency, detect equipment failures, and power soft sensors. The goal: design the world's most optimal factories through cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders and design teams.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Implement complex system models integrating mechanical, thermal, chemical, and control theories in custom software
  • Design and implement control algorithms that optimize plant operations
  • Own and maintain controls-plant model software in the loop tests
  • Navigate cross-functional engineering teams to gather requirements and deliver solutions
  • Integrate live factory data into models to detect equipment anomalies
  • Optimize plant efficiency through modeling support
  • Apply knowledge of motors, pumps, sensors, actuators, and thermodynamic systems to accurately model plant behavior
  • Design high-level control strategies informed by simulation and data analytics

Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years in Systems Design Engineering and first-principles modeling, preferably with multi-physics simulations
  • Proficiency in Python and/or simulation software with functional software engineering skills
  • Strong grasp of mechanical, electrical, and thermodynamic fundamentals
  • Experience with complex system design
  • Self-motivated, hands-on attitude with willingness to contribute at all levels
  • Passion for sustainability and making the world better
