The Role
Defines the requirements to design, develop, build, and maintain the tools, processes and data architecture of a Model Based Enterprise. Analyzes capabilities of existing and proposed systems, and develops technical, structural, and organizational specifications. Leads internal and external stakeholders through determining conditions and designing fully functional and secure digital solutions. Develops long-range objectives and strategic plans for digital engineering innovations, and effectively communicates documented data and results to necessary stakeholders. Generates and presents business case analyses to executive leadership to pursue digital enterprise opportunities. Enables digital transformation efforts by conducting research, driving new technical approaches and processes, as well as developing and managing testing of functionality.
E92 Model Based Engineering (MBe) team, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Model-Based Engineer to join our innovative team and support our efforts to revolutionize how we design, build, and sustain aircraft carriers and submarines. The primary responsibility of this team members will be to support projects in the MBe Innovation Cell (iCELL). The ideal candidate will leverage model-based systems engineering (MBSE) techniques to support the lifecycle management process to develop, test, implement innovative engineering & design solutions of complex shipbuilding projects. This individual will require a solid understanding of current engineering processes as well as an overall understanding of how ships are designed, planned, constructed, and maintained. This position includes a range of responsibilities including leading R&D-related projects, systems engineering, process & tool solution development (including TcU/NX, SAP, SIMCENTER, etc.), industry standards, project management, and support strategy development. This individual will be required to interface with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels of leadership.
This person will be supporting the SSN(X) new Submarine design, and FORD Class Carrier and focus on the use of a model based environment to develop a comprehensive framework for digital twin value assessment and analysis processes. The focus areas are to define "what" and to "what level" digital twins should be considered for NNS programs followed by the "How" to manage digital twin maturity states. They should also have basic knowledge of and a willing to learn emerging technology enablers, including model based analysis and simulation concepts, requirements management, IoT, software driven systems, and sensor feedback for component operating and behavior characteristics necessary to validate physical to virtual relationships of a digital twin.

9 Years with Bachelors in Science; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies to support design, analysis, verification, and validation of complex ship systems
• Able to lead a project and be responsible for all aspects of project management
• Familiar with product lifecycle management (PLM), data environments like IPDE or FCDE, and product modeling processes
• Develop and maintain systems models using tools such as CAMEO, MagicDraw, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate best practices across various engineering disciplines
• Support the development and management of system requirements, interfaces, and architecture
• Conduct trade studies and analyses to evaluate design options and optimize system performance
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and NNS processes
• Communicate complex technical information effectively to stakeholders at all levels
• Working knowledge of various tools such as Siemens TcU/NX, Simcenter, Mendix, MPP, SAP, etc
• Participate in design reviews, technical interchange activities, and program planning activities
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of MBSE processes and tools within the organization
• Experience with digital twin, simulation, and digital thread concept
• Familiarity with Navy shipbuilding programs and requirements
• Experience in project management and leading engineering teams
