Positional Overview
The Imagine Group is recruiting for an Accounting Director on behalf of our client, a leading academic health system dedicated to providing high-quality patient care, advancing medical research, and educating the next generation of healthcare professionals. With a broad network of hospitals, clinics, and specialized services, the organization is committed to innovation, collaboration, and improving health outcomes across the communities it serves.
In this role, you will be responsible for leading general ledger accounting, financial reporting, monthly close, reconciliations, and financial analysis across cash, investments, net assets, accounts receivable, and other balance sheet accounts. You will provide oversight to the accounting team, partner cross-functionally with Treasury, Patient Accounting, Revenue Cycle, and other departments, and communicate complex financial findings to Leadership while supporting audits and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
Role & Responsibility:
Tasks That Will Lead to Your Success:
  • Provide leadership and oversight of general ledger accounting functions, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete, and recorded in accordance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.
  • Oversee monthly reconciliations of operating cash accounts in coordination with Treasury, including investigation and resolution of outstanding checks, deposits in transit, and other reconciling items.
  • Oversee the accounting and classification of restricted and unrestricted cash, investments, and related activity, including monitoring spend associated with capital projects and major programs.
  • Review investment roll forwards, carrying values, fair market values, insured and uninsured balances, and investment maturities.
  • Oversee consolidated and market-level net asset reconciliations and analysis of changes in capital assets, investments, restricted and unrestricted assets, and related debt.
  • Direct the monthly reconciliation and allocation of unapplied cash, partnering with Patient Accounting, Treasury, and related entities to ensure balances are accurately recorded and appropriately allocated.
  • Oversee the analysis and valuation of patient accounts receivable, including contractual reserves, estimated collections, cash collections, net revenue, and value-based care considerations.
  • Review AR trends and quality, including denials, non-covered charges, changes in payer behavior, and fluctuations in the value of services.
  • Oversee monthly accounting and analysis of Retail Pharmacy accounts receivable and revenue, including aging, adjustments, unapplied cash, collection rates, provisions, and allowance accounts.
  • Lead the preparation and review of consolidated and market-level cash flow statements and ensure appropriate support for significant balance and transaction-level activity.
  • Ensure accounting workpapers are accurate, organized, properly documented, and completed within established monthly and year-end deadlines.
  • Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit, including providing requested documentation, supporting audit inquiries, and assisting with financial statement footnotes.
  • Review and approve account reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules, and financial analyses prepared by the accounting team.
  • Identify unusual variances, trends, and discrepancies and develop appropriate corrective actions.
  • Translate complex accounting and financial information into clear, actionable information for Leadership.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and oversight to accounting staff and ensure appropriate controls and processes are maintained.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, reconciliations, and overall efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable GAAP, internal accounting policies, and organizational procedures.
Skills & Experience
Qualifications That Will Help You Thrive
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant general ledger and financial reporting experience.
  • Previous experience managing or leading accounting professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience with cash, investments, accounts receivable, revenue, and balance sheet accounting.
  • Experience working in a complex, multi-entity or healthcare environment strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare accounting, hospital, physician practice, or revenue cycle experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
  • Experience supporting external audits and preparing audit documentation.
  • Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems and financial reporting databases.
  • Experience with EPIC or similar healthcare financial/reporting systems preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to both accounting professionals and executive leadership.
