Compiler Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a compiler intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Compiler Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, data structures, algorithms, and compiler theory, typically supported by coursework in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with tools and languages such as C/C++, LLVM, GCC, and version control systems like Git is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for contributing to complex codebases, debugging intricate issues, and collaborating with experienced engineers on compiler projects.

What does a compiler intern do?

A Compiler Intern assists in the development, testing, and optimization of compilers, which are programs that translate source code written in one programming language into another language, typically machine code. Their tasks often include debugging existing compiler code, implementing new features, writing tests, and analyzing code performance. They work closely with experienced compiler engineers to learn about language parsing, code generation, and optimization techniques. This role is ideal for students interested in computer science theory, programming languages, and software engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can a compiler intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Compiler Intern, you can expect to work on tasks such as optimizing code generation, implementing new language features, fixing bugs, and writing automated tests. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers to understand how various compiler components interact and may be assigned to enhance front-end parsing, intermediate representations, or back-end code emission. The work environment typically encourages learning, mentorship, and contributing to real-world projects that directly impact the efficiency and reliability of the compiler. This role provides valuable exposure to large-scale codebases and modern software development practices.

Job description

About the Role

Join DensityAI as a software engineering intern working on the software stack behind our custom AI accelerator. You'll work alongside the kernel, compiler, and architecture teams on the layer where high-level ML workloads meet silicon - writing performance-critical code, building the tooling that measures it, and running your work on our architectural simulator. This is a hands-on internship with genuine ownership, close mentorship, and a real project to show for it.

What You'll Do
  • Write and optimize compute code for a custom AI accelerator - tensor operations, data movement patterns, and memory hierarchy exploitation
  • Build and extend profiling and benchmarking infrastructure that measures performance against architectural targets
  • Run kernels and workloads end-to-end on the architectural simulator, and help debug what doesn't behave as expected
  • Contribute to tooling, test coverage, and automation the kernel and compiler teams depend on daily
  • Take part in code reviews and design discussions with your mentor and the wider team
  • Write up what you built - onboarding notes, guides, and documentation that outlast your internship
  • Present your project and results to the team at the end of the internship
What We're Looking For
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • C/C++ and/or Python - you've written real programs, not just coursework snippets, and you're comfortable debugging your own code
  • Strong CS fundamentals - data structures, algorithms, and a working mental model of how code executes on a machine
  • Genuine interest in computer architecture and performance - pipelines, memory hierarchies, and why one implementation is 10x faster than another
  • Curiosity, self-direction, and eagerness to learn fast in a startup environment
Compensation

Final offers depend on level, location, and skills relevant to the role. Additional compensation: equity grant per company guidelines; medical / dental / vision; 401(k); standard PTO.

Visa Sponsorship

DensityAI sponsors qualified candidates for H-1B, O-1, TN, E-3, and other employment-based visas, and we welcome applicants on F-1 OPT and STEM-OPT. Work authorization is required at start; we provide immigration support to secure or transfer status.

Export Controls

Aspects of this role may involve access to information subject to U.S. export controls (EAR/ITAR). We may discuss licensing or scope adjustments during the interview.

Equal Opportunity

DensityAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, age (40+), sexual orientation, military or veteran status, pregnancy, or any other status protected by law. We comply with the California CROWN Act and provide reasonable accommodations on request.
