Overview

A community dietitian plays an important role in improving the health, nutrition and overall quality of life for people within a community. They provide citizens with information on healthy foods to eat and foods to avoid. The specific responsibilities can vary with the employer but generally include instructing the public, creating educational materials, evaluating restaurants, developing menus, and conducting research.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct the public on healthy nutrition through seminars, school visits, and nursing home workshops, including balanced diet, limiting processed foods, and exercise recommendations.
  • Develop educational materials such as posters, slide‑show presentations, and pamphlets to support training programs.
  • Guide community members on specific nutrition topics, such as child nutrition for toddlers and sports nutrition for athletes.
  • Evaluate restaurants for sanitation, menu quality, and ingredient healthiness, and provide recommendations to improve menu offerings.
  • Assist restaurants in developing healthier menus by collaborating with management teams to replace unhealthy dishes with nutritious alternatives.
