What is a community development manager?
A community development manager oversees local events and establishes relationships with community members to promote company visibility and economic growth. Specific job duties vary, depending on the company and industry. In business, you cultivate positive partnerships with local companies, community groups, and government agencies through hosting informational events or attending regional forums. Other responsibilities include analyzing the financial impact your company has on the community and determines whether or not the area provides a healthy market for your company. You research and evaluate the needs of the designated market region and discover how the company can offer products or services to fulfill that need, or find areas to develop and open new businesses. Non-profit organizations utilize community development managers to spread the message of their cause and promote participation or solicit donations.

Job description
Join us to shape communities, collaborate with passionate professionals, and grow with a company that invests in your success, where you’re not just an Employee but an Owner.
About Our FirmSince 1968, NTH Consultants, Ltd. has been a critical part of the infrastructure engineering and environmental services that strengthen our communities and protect our ecosystem. From geotechnical engineering and environmental consulting to structural design and construction management, and beyond, we provide solutions that support the success and sustainability of projects.
When you join NTH, you’ll gain more than a job- you’ll become part of a team that values your career, your growth, and your life. We are committed to providing a flexible and supportive environment, professional development opportunities, and a vibrant culture that celebrates collaboration and innovation. Our culture is built on accountability, ownership, inclusion, integrity, safety, and excellence.
As NTH continues to grow, we are looking to hire a Project Director to help expand our client footprint. With offices in Northville, Detroit, East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and a lab and equipment office in Livonia, we are positioned to expand our services and client portfolio to align with the company’s strategic plan.
The Markets We Serve- Energy: We are dedicated to helping our energy clients navigate the rapidly evolving energy landscape. From large utilities and independent power producers to municipalities and industrial facilities, our clients trust us to provide innovative, sustainable solutions to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s energy demands.
- Industry: We bring decades of experience serving industrial clients across all sectors, including chemical, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and waste management. Our reputation is built on strong client advocacy, delivering innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with complex regulatory frameworks.
- Water: We are dedicated to helping communities sustain and improve their water and wastewater infrastructure. As capital needs for drinking water and wastewater systems continue to exceed available funding, we provide innovative, cost‑effective solutions that maximize the value of every investment. Our expertise extends across planning, design, construction, and operations, ensuring infrastructure systems meet today’s demands and are resilient for the future.
- Transportation: Transportation infrastructure is an essential part of daily life, impacting how we live, work, and play. Roads, bridges, and transportation systems connect us to workplaces, schools, recreation, and essential goods. These networks are among the most visible elements of public infrastructure, and their condition directly affects the quality of life for communities. As public demand grows for safe, efficient, and reliable transportation, maintaining and upgrading these systems has become a top priority for municipalities, agencies, and private stakeholders.
- Community Development: In today’s world, communities are more than just places to live—they are where we work, play, and connect. However, many neighborhoods across Michigan and the Midwest were not designed to meet the modern needs of their citizens. Aging infrastructure and outdated streetscapes often fail to support how people want to experience their communities. We understand the importance of revitalizing public spaces to enhance community development and improve quality of life. We help our clients and their residents get started by creating dynamic neighborhoods, reinvigorating public spaces, and infusing energy into their communities and downtowns.
- Lead and manage the Industrial Hygiene Department within the Environmental Division by overseeing personnel, technical operations, project delivery, regulatory compliance, client relationships, business development, and departmental financial performance.
- Supervise industrial hygienists and technical staff.
- Plan staffing, assign resources, conduct performance evaluations, and support employee development and professional certifications.
- Foster a safe, collaborative, and high‑performing work environment.
- Build, manage, and grow industrial hygiene consulting services, including occupational exposure monitoring, hazardous materials assessments, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead, mold, noise, chemical exposure, and related investigations.
- Oversee project planning, scheduling, budgeting, profitability, technical quality, and timely delivery.
- Review and approve technical reports, sampling protocols, and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as relevant industry standards and client‑specific requirements.
- Maintain department QA/QC procedures and standardize field practices.
- Develop proposals, fee estimates, strategic growth opportunities, and new business initiatives that expand the department’s client base and service offerings.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients and support cross‑selling of environmental services and strategic growth initiatives.
- Manage departmental budgets, revenue, expenses, profitability, and staff utilization.
- Oversee department equipment, technology investments, maintenance, and calibration programs.
- In collaboration with the Safety Director, promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with company safety policies, PPE requirements, field safety procedures, and incident reporting.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Technology, Environmental Science/Health, Natural Resources, or related degree, from a 4‑year accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
- 15+ years of experience of demonstrated leadership experience providing technical solutions to civil and/or environmental challenges and with relevant experience as a consultant, client advocate, and/or account manager within the industry.
- Experience with project planning, budgeting, delegation, and management to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Experience negotiating project scope and fees with clients.
- Experience advocating for clients and projects with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
- Experience leading and growing a team of diverse professionals.
- Ability to organize technical material into comprehensive reports and perform QA/QC reviews on work product.
- Project planning, invoicing, and collections, budgeting, task delegation and management to ensure project is completed according to work plans.
- Demonstrated ability to seek and establish new clients and build good business relations with both new and existing clients.
- Develop and maintain professional business relations with clients.
- Assist in developing business strategies and action plans for creating growth opportunities.
- Conduct periodic site / client visits, project, and business development meetings.
- Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills.
- Time management skills, ability to manage multiple projects at any given time, and have ability to work in a team environment.
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrate collaborative approach to problem‑solving, and have ability to interact with clients to understand their needs.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at job sites/offices in Michigan.
- May be required to perform job duties in the field and office, during non‑standard work hours, as necessary.
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Rewards For Performance We recognize great work with competitive pay with a generous compensation program to reward performance. Bonus programs are available for eligible roles.
- Career Roadmaps & Professional Growth At NTH, managers meet with staff quarterly to support goal setting and growth through our Career Planning program. With clear career roadmaps for every role, you’ll see your path forward and grow with us.
- Our Project Excellence career track offers a clear path into project management, backed by robust training and mentoring to help you lead successful projects and deliver exceptional client experiences.

Plus, through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), you become an employee owner of the firm, sharing in the success you help create. - Flexible‑Hybrid Work Environment Balance matters. For eligible roles; work where you're most productive—whether that’s at home, in the office, or a mix of both.

As an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, every employee has a stake in our success, fostering a strong sense of accountability, collaboration, and pride in the work we do. Being employee‑owned means, we are invested—not just in our projects, but in each other and in the communities we serve.
