Communications Internships information

What is a communications internship?

Communications internships are temporary positions designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in the field of communications. Interns typically assist with tasks such as drafting press releases, managing social media, organizing events, and supporting internal and external communication strategies. These internships help individuals develop practical skills, build a professional network, and gain insight into potential career paths within public relations, marketing, media, and corporate communications. The experience gained can be valuable for securing full-time roles in the industry after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a communications intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Communications Intern, you need strong writing, research, and organizational skills, often supported by coursework in communications, public relations, or journalism. Familiarity with content management systems, social media platforms, and basic design or analytics tools like Canva and Google Analytics is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate and take feedback make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to producing effective communications, supporting team objectives, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in a professional environment.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a communications internship?

During a Communications Internship, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects such as drafting press releases, managing social media accounts, creating internal newsletters, and supporting event planning or media outreach efforts. Interns often collaborate closely with communications teams to help execute campaigns and monitor media coverage. This hands-on experience provides exposure to both internal and external communications while developing valuable skills in writing, digital content creation, and stakeholder engagement.

Job description

Description

Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio (LASCO)'s mission is to provide civil legal aid and advocacy to overcome unfairness and injustice, reduce poverty, and increase opportunity. LASCO has a long-standing history of being committed to searching out the patterns, causes of, and solutions to the repetitive and fundamental legal problems facing low-income Ohioans and pursuing the legal recourse needed to address those problems. Since 1966, our organizations have helped thousands of Ohio's poor obtain and keep housing, secure public benefits, worked with families to gain and maintain economic stability, and helped domestic violence survivors to live free of fear and abuse and to obtain the resources needed to sustain themselves and their children.

LASCO is pleased to offer the Communications Internship opportunity. The Internship is housed within our Communication and Development team and helps amplify LASCO's message, engage supporters, and build lasting community relationships. We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2026 term.

The Communications Intern will play an important role in supporting our outreach and development efforts during a pivotal time for our organization. Working closely with the Communications Director and the development team, the intern will contribute to a variety of communication initiatives that inform and engage our stakeholders-including clients, donors, pro bono attorneys, and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing our communications and outreach plan.
  • Draft, design, and curate content for monthly newsletters, including client stories, updates, and impact highlights.
  • Support the creation and distribution of LASCO's summer fundraising appeal, including database management, donor research, and messaging.
  • Help manage social media content and coordinate outreach with press and media outlets.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly communications and development team meetings.
  • Conduct research and contribute ideas to strengthen stakeholder engagement.

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, development, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Mentorship from experienced legal aid and communications professionals.
  • Opportunities to contribute to real-world outreach and fundraising efforts that support meaningful access to justice.
  • A chance to be part of a mission-driven organization committed to equity and impact.

Requirements

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills tailored to different audiences.
  • Experience using Canva, Hootsuite or Mailchimp (not required)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Creative, organized, and eager to learn.
  • Interest or experience in nonprofit communications, marketing, public relations, or fundraising is a plus.
  • Passion for social justice and serving under-served communities.

The Internship

The Communications Internship term will be based on the school year semester and run between September and November. The Internship anticipates between 30 - 40 hours worked per week over the 10-week period with virtual components as well as hybrid work flexibility. The Internship is funded at a rate of $20 per hour and is based in Columbus, Ohio.

Interns will have a dedicated workspace and access to the necessary equipment, tools and materials to complete assignments, including a computer and other resources.
