General Definition of Work:
The Communications Assistant provides communications, administrative, and operational support for the Office of Communications. This position assists in the development and delivery of district communications, digital content, community engagement, employee and student recognition, and special events while ensuring the efficient daily operation of the Communications Office.
Working collaboratively with schools, departments, and community partners, the Communications Assistant helps communicate the work of Darlington County School District by celebrating student achievement, supporting district initiatives, strengthening relationships with employees, families, and the community, and promoting confidence in the district.
Essential Functions:
Communications & Digital Media
  • Assist in creating and distributing district communications, including newsletters, press releases, publications, presentations, promotional materials and multimedia projects.
  • Assist with the creation, scheduling, and monitoring of traditional media, social media, and website content.
  • Maintain communication archives.

Community Engagement & Events
  • Assist with planning and coordinating district meetings and events, including event logistics, materials, signage, registrations, and supplies.
  • Support employee, student and district recognition initiatives.

Administrative Operations
  • Serve as the primary customer service contact for the Communications Office.
  • Respond to routine requests while ensuring information is timely, accurate, and consistent with district messaging.
  • Provide administrative support including scheduling, travel documentation, and office organization.
  • Process purchase orders, invoices, reimbursements, and procurement requests.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting, financial tracking, and records management in accordance with district procedures.

Collaboration & Support
  • Build positive working relationships with schools, departments, families, community partners, and media representatives.
  • Ability to write and edit content for a variety of audiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and customer service skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound professional judgment.

Qualifications:
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Preferred
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, business administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in communications, office administration, event coordination, marketing, public relations, or a related area.
  • Experience with photography, graphic design, social media, website management, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar communications tools.

Special Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license or ability to provide reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel to district schools, community events, and professional meetings.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work to support district events.
