What does a communication systems engineer do?

A Communication Systems Engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems that transmit information, such as telecommunications networks, satellite systems, and wireless communication infrastructures. They ensure that data is transmitted efficiently, securely, and reliably between different locations or devices. Their work often involves analyzing system requirements, selecting appropriate technologies, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing system performance. Communication Systems Engineers may work in sectors like telecommunications, aerospace, defense, or information technology.

What are some common challenges communication systems engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Communication Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to integrating new technologies with existing infrastructure, ensuring system reliability, and meeting strict regulatory requirements. Coordinating among multidisciplinary teams—such as hardware, software, and network specialists—requires strong collaboration and project management skills. Additionally, engineers must stay updated with evolving communication standards and security protocols to deliver robust, future-proof solutions.

What is the difference between Communication Systems Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectCommunication Systems EngineerNetwork Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related fields; certifications like CCNA, Cisco, or CompTIABachelor's in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related; certifications like CCNA, Cisco, or CompTIA
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and maintaining communication infrastructure such as radio, satellite, and telecommunication systemsDesigning, implementing, and managing computer networks, including LANs, WANs, and data centers
Industry UsageTelecommunications, defense, aerospace, and broadcast industriesIT, technology, and corporate sectors

Communication Systems Engineers focus on designing and maintaining communication infrastructure like radio and satellite systems, while Network Engineers primarily manage computer networks. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping industries, but their specific focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a communication systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Communication Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, signal processing, and telecommunications principles, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB, hardware description languages (HDLs), and industry standards like LTE or 5G, as well as certifications like Cisco or IEEE, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for designing, optimizing, and maintaining reliable communication networks in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

Job description

Hubble Network was founded with the intention of delivering on the promise of what Internet-of-Things (IoT) was supposed to be. We're building a global Bluetooth® network dedicated to machine-to-machine connectivity. We differentiate ourselves as the first modem-less and gateway-less, direct-to-satellite network from off-the-shelf Bluetooth® Low Energy chips. Hubble is ideal for applications in logistics, AgTech, and maritime where economies of scale for volume consumer and enterprise asset tracking is a priority. Our goal is to be the first billion-endpoint-connected network in the world.
Hubble is an early-stage, venture-backed startup supported by some of the best investors in the world. In their previous lives, the founding team has been successful in raising $100s of millions in venture funding, developing the Amazon Sidewalk network, launching billions of dollars of space assets, and leading their teams to successful exits, both through acquisition and IPO. We are now looking to bring on talented team members who are the best at what they do to help us make Hubble a reality for the world.
As a Wireless Systems Engineer, you will be part of the team developing and implementing algorithms to enable wireless connectivity between Terrestrial Bluetooth® devices and satellites. You will be involved in all aspects of the modeling, system design and implementation of wireless communication and work with cross-functional groups of hardware-software engineers.
This is a full-time position with preference to be based in Seattle, WA (Relocation Assistance Available) but open to a remote work option (for senior/more experienced candidates).
