POSITION GOAL
Serve as the District's spokesperson, providing strategic direction for communications, public relations, and stakeholder engagement. Plan and oversee a comprehensive communications program that promotes and maintains a positive public image and "brand" for The School Board of Broward County, Florida. Foster and strengthen relationships with local, state, national government and community organizations, and key stakeholders. Support awareness and engagement by communicating the District's priorities, initiatives, and innovative practices that advance student success.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director Communications shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below:
A. Leadership and Management - effectively establish robust, multi-dimensional public relations, government affairs and communications processes throughout the District based on Best Practices (research based, evidence based and/or leading business verified) by:
  • Contributing leadership to the organization beyond assigned accountabilities to champion The School Board of Broward County's mission, vision, and strategic plan, including the development and management of a District strategic plan for communications, public relations, and government affairs.
  • Manifest professional code of ethics and values.
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the District's communications, public relations, and government affairs functions to ensure alignment with the District's mission, vision, and strategic priorities.
  • Establish and implement research-based and data-informed communication strategies and best practices across the District.
  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans with measurable outcomes to support District initiatives and priorities.
  • Developing and managing the department budget and all operational reporting functions as appropriate.
  • Managing performance, ensuring the effectiveness, supporting career development, and evaluating the performance of assigned staff.
  • Providing ongoing advice and counsel on public relations, government affairs, community relations and communications to the Superintendent and other key leaders within the SBBC organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • An earned master's degree in Education, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years' experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field to the title of the position.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing communications teams or functions.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic communications and marketing initiatives across multiple communications and media platforms including web, social media, print, broadcast, and direct marketing channels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current information technologies and digital communications platforms.Ability to identify media and market trends and opportunities that can impact student success, parent engagement, and overall District enrollment.
  • Experience serving as a spokesperson with extensive experience level, in matters related to public relations and media engagement.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with strong executive presence, interpersonal effectiveness, and the ability to lead high-impact communications and stakeholder engagement.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • An earned master's degree in Education, Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working in a large public-sector organization or school district.
  • Candidates who have been Accredited in Public Relations (APR), by the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB), are preferred
  • Bilingual skills.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose
Frequently collaborates with the Superintendent, School Board Members, executive leadership, government agencies, media representatives, and community stakeholders to develop and communicate strategic messaging that supports District priorities. Serves as the primary liaison for public relations and communications, ensuring accurate, timely, and transparent information sharing to enhance stakeholder engagement, public trust, and the District's overall reputation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
