Job description

The Engineering Division is seeking a Communications Student Assistant to support its corporate communications efforts. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment.

Under the guidance of the Division's lead communication specialist, the student will contribute to a variety of internal and external communications projects, including writing, design, and digital content creation. A key responsibility of the role will be to lead the Division's initiative to catalog and archive photos and videos related to Engineering Division activities.

This role is ideal for students with an interest in science communication, marketing, writing, design, or digital media. The selected student will have the chance to pitch and write articles, contribute to digital campaigns, and take ownership of a digital media archiving project-all while supporting the mission of a world-renowned scientific institution.

You will:

  • Support the Engineering Division by writing emails, web content, social media content, and articles.
  • Take ownership of archiving images and videos for the Division, including researching and writing captions and ensuring the assets are properly tagged.
  • Write articles showcasing the Division's Engineering work.
  • Assist with video production, photography and graphic design.
  • Ensure accuracy of items produced for the Division and help shepherd assets through approval processes.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop campaigns to support the goals of the Division.
  • Pitch ideas for content, articles, and communications pieces.
  • Proof read and edit materials for the Division.

We are looking for:

  • Undergraduate student in good standing majoring in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a related field.
  • Ability to oversee archiving photos and digital media in the Berkeley Lab digital asset management system, including gathering images, tagging and meta data, and researching, writing and ensuring the accuracy of captions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and command of standard MSOffice suite.
  • Strong interest in digital communication, content creation, social media, and science communication.
  • Organized, reliable, and proactive with excellent attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of tools such as Google Workspace, Canva, and WordPress.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including video editing and/or graphic design skills.
  • Understanding of databases and archiving.

Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time student assistant Summer appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. 
  • Salary range: The hourly range of this position is $19.18 - $25.18. The final hourly rate is dependent on years of education completed.
  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work modality: Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. A REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
  • Work authorization: Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
