Job description

Your Opportunity:

Are you passionate about patient safety, healthcare quality, and the safe use of medical devices? Alberta Health Services is seeking a Senior Clinical Risk Advisor to join the Product Quality & Safety team within the Medical Device Safety Program. In this specialized provincial role, you will lead and influence medical device risk management practices across Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, and affiliated organizations. You will play a critical role in identifying and mitigating risks associated with medical devices, preventing harm to patients and healthcare providers, and advancing a culture of safety across the healthcare system. As a recognized subject matter expert, you will collaborate with clinical leaders, physicians, healthcare professionals, regulatory agencies, and medical device manufacturers to address complex device-related safety concerns. You will lead investigations of device-related incidents, support recall management activities, conduct risk-benefit analyses, and contribute to post-market surveillance initiatives that improve patient outcomes and device safety. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence medical device safety not only within Alberta but across Canada and North America through partnerships with Health Canada, industry stakeholders, and other healthcare jurisdictions. You will help shape best practices, inform policy and process improvements, and contribute to provincial and national discussions on medical device safety and performance. If you are a healthcare professional with strong clinical expertise, exceptional analytical skills, and a passion for advancing patient safety through innovation and collaboration, this role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact on healthcare quality at a system-wide level.

Description:

The Senior Clinical Risk Advisor is a provincial subject matter expert responsible for advancing medical device risk management, recall management, and post-market surveillance activities within the Product Quality & Safety division of the Medical Device Safety Program. Reporting to the Provincial Manager, Product Quality & Safety, the role provides expert consultation and leadership to support the safe use of medical devices and mitigate risks to patients, staff, and the organization. The position develops and promotes evidence-informed best practices, evaluates emerging safety concerns, and leads responses to medical device incidents, recalls, and adverse events. Key responsibilities include monitoring and interpreting medical device regulations and industry standards; conducting clinical risk assessments and risk-benefit analyses; investigating device-related adverse events; leading improvement initiatives related to recall management and post-market surveillance; developing policies, procedures, and educational resources; and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to improve device safety and performance. The Senior Clinical Risk Advisor works closely with clinical programs, Patient Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, Supply Chain teams, Legal Services, Health Canada, medical device manufacturers, and other partners to ensure effective risk management strategies are implemented throughout the organization. This role requires advanced clinical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to make complex decisions in situations where formal guidance may be limited. The position carries significant provincial impact and contributes to organizational quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery.
