Job Duties

These positions are open due to the expansion of criminal appellate duties of the Office of the Attorney General due to Appeal of Right legislation enacted in 2022 .
Responsibilities include representing the Commonwealth in criminal appeals in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia. In addition, this attorney will handle habeas corpus and other post-trial litigation at all judicial levels in both state and federal courts. Some overnight travel will be required. Duties also include advice and assistance on other matters related to criminal law and procedure, including legislative issues before the Virginia General Assembly.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate should have a good academic record, as well as demonstrated excellent legal writing, research and oral communication skills, and possess superior analytical ability, objectivity and maturity of judgment.
At least one year of experience as a licensed attorney is required and one to three years of judicial law clerk, trial or appellate experience is highly desirable.
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or eligible for admission.
