POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Commissioning (Cx) Engineer - Level 4 plays a key role in supporting successful execution of commissioning, re/retro-commissioning (RCx), and energy audit projects. This individual will provide technical expertise, oversight, and technical management to ensure that the performance of buildings, systems, and equipment conform to design specifications. This person will also be engaged in marketing activities to support business development efforts, and management of other staff.

Ideally, the person filling this opening will have at least ten years of experience doing this type of work, building operations background, an engineering degree, and Professional Engineer License, familiar with HVAC Test & Balance (TAB) procedures, holding either NEBB Building Systems Commissioning Certification (or equivalent), and established industry contacts and relationships. However, KFI is prepared to hire the right individual, who may be less experienced and does not have these preferred credentials โ€“ provided they have the other necessary qualifications. KFI is prepared to invest in the development of the right candidate through internal training and self-driven additional training courses.

The successful candidate will have a pragmatic and applied approach, enjoy fieldwork, and effectively interact directly with customers and contractors. Operational knowledge of Building Automation Controls (BAS) experience is required. They will have a strong attention to detail and will possess effective communication and influencing skills. This person will also be self-directed and will thrive in an environment where consultation and collaboration lead to superior outcomes.

Specific core responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Field Task Execution

  • Conducts building performance evaluations and audits, including commissioning, re-commissioning, and retro-commissioning activities.
  • Primarily executes Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) functional tests, including point verification and sequence tests.
  • Will be expected to create and execute/witness other systems tests such as electrical, lighting, life safety, fire protection, or plumbing systems.
  • Actively participates in construction meetings. Directs commissioning meetings, recording action items and distributing these to all key stakeholders.
  • Performs construction inspections to ensure MEP installations conform to project documents.
  • Able to perform Test & Balance (TAB) measurements, primarily in retro-commissioning applications. May include execution and management of new construction TAB projects, provided the proper certifications are held.

Reporting

  • Ability to write and assemble technical reports for commissioning and re/retro-commissioning projects.
  • May be asked to assist other department staff in calculating building energy use and savings.

Project Management

  • Act as a Project Manager, including developing a project plan, requesting and securing resources, and keeping the project on track for on time delivery.
    1. Also ensures that all project work is properly set-up, documented, and reported.
  • Performs design reviews from a commissioning standpoint for new construction Cx projects. Ability to review existing documentation and provide recommendations for re/retro-commissioning projects.
  • Reviews MEP submittals for conformance to design documents and ownerโ€™s best interests.
  • Manages financial aspects of assigned projects, including managing budgets, invoicing, and forecast projects.
  • Perform staff management, including managing Performance Group personnel working on their project(s). This includes training of less experienced staff in all aspects of commissioning and re/retro-commissioning tasks.

Business Development

  • Will be asked to contribute to aspects of the business development process, including:
    1. Communicate and build internal and external relationships to ensure marketing strategy and input is aggressive, accurate, persuasive, and timely.
    2. Support new business development opportunities, including properly defined, scoped, and priced.
    3. Assist in development of letter proposals, including compiling technical and non-technical data, editing, printing, assembly, and submittal of proposal.
    4. Assist in the preparation of proposals and interviews.
    5. Attend conferences and trade shows, networking and identifying new leads and prospects.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without the need for work sponsorship now or in the future.
  • 10+ years of direct HVAC, building operations, or construction fields.
  • Experience using AutoCAD.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel.
  • Represent the company in a professional matter.
  • Proficient in use of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application.
  • Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel.

  • Working experience with Revit

Salary Range: $115,000 - $144,000 annually. The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual qualifications, experience, work location, and education. This position is eligible for an annual bonus.
