Job description

The Student Tutor provides support to students in designated subject areas to promote academic achievement. Responsibilities include assisting students in understanding course concepts, reinforcing classroom instruction, and fostering the development of effective study and learning strategies. The Student Tutor is expected to maintain a professional and supportive learning environment, demonstrate strong subject matter knowledge, and adhere to institutional policies regarding academic integrity and confidentiality. This role contributes to the overall mission of the College by supporting student success and retention initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current student at NWCC
  • Completed Composition I
  • Communicates well with students
  • Maintains an interested attitude and is both friendly and patient
  • Supports a facilitative, conversational, inquiry-based approach to consultations with students
  • Has completed or is enrolled in ENG 2813 (Peer Tutor Training) course [before or during time of employment]

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Work with students individually or in groups to help them develop their skills as writers.
  2. Work between 4 to 15 hours a week during peak times of the semester, including supplementary meetings identified by the director.
  3. Attend paid, mandatory one-hour weekly staff meetings.
  4. Offer non-directive guidance to students by asking questions, discussing strategy, and providing models and resources from which the students can learn.
  5. Complete small assignments as part of ongoing professional development.
  6. Communicate with fellow consultants and the director in a professional manner
  7. Participate in providing workshops to classrooms on an as-needed basis
  8. Visit classrooms to deliver short writing center orientations on an as-needed basis.
  9. Contribute to the Writing Center's resource library.
  10. Accurately and punctually enter client report forms on the Writing Centers website (http://northwestms.mywconline.com).
  11. Arrive to work promptly, work the entire scheduled shift, and follow the writing center's policy for finding a substitute.
  12. Engage in marketing the writing center as coordinated between the director and the student.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by Writing Center Director.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule
  • Must work well in a team environment 
  • Ideal candidate should have a positive attitude, be productive with minimal supervision, and have a good attendance record

Safety Statement
