Job description

Major Tool & Machine (MTM) takes great pride in the talented people that come to work here. We offer market-leading pay, benefits, optional 9/80 work schedule, quarterly bonus potential, and a culture focused on employee engagement.

We are seeking a hands-on, self-starting Production Engineer to support our Production Assembly department in a high-mix, low-volume job shop environment. This role focuses on daily support of critical assemblies and processes, including, but not limited to, using hand tools, installing various components, inserts, pins, and bushings, and operating inspection or testing equipment. The Production Engineer will work directly on the product, helping to resolve issues, improve throughput, and drive continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining close contact with their engineering team.

This position receives technical and strategic direction from the Engineering Department, while being embedded with the shop floor team and reporting operationally to an Engineering Program Manager with a dotted line to the area Manufacturing Manager.

• Provide daily, hands-on technical support to the assembly area to troubleshoot and resolve production issues.

• Collaborate closely with shop floor personnel to improve assembly methods and eliminate inefficiencies.

• Drive continuous improvement efforts, targeting increased throughput, better ergonomics, and reduced waste.

• Maintain and update routing instructions, supplemental routing instructions, and guides to reflect best practices.

• Identify and implement corrective actions for quality or process concerns.

• Assist with training and onboarding of shop floor personnel by utilizing process documentation.

• Support Engineering in implementing process changes, process trials, and new product introductions.

• Use inspection equipment and assist in interpreting results to support quality objectives.

• Maintain job accuracy and support documentation practices.

• Participate in job release and post-job review meetings to support operational feedback and improvements.

Educational Experience – Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred, but not required. Equivalent work experience in assembly or hands-on mechanical work will be considered with other experience requirements met.

Experience – Must have the following skill sets:

  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude, with experience in mechanical assembly operations involving hand tools, fixtures, and inspection tools is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings and assembly documentation.
  • Strong computer literacy, written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work cross-functionally. Requires ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a practical and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts and standard work documentation is a plus.

Working Conditions – The work area requires strict use of PPE appropriate for the task. When working in the general shop environment may be frequently subject to:

  • high noise levels from operating machines,
  • physical hazards from moving equipment and production components,
  • breathing fumes, dust and mist,
  • skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids,
  • welding flash.
