Is it smart to take a commission-only job?

A commission-only job can offer high earning potential but also involves income variability and financial risk. It is suitable for individuals with strong sales skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage inconsistent income streams. Prospective workers should consider their financial stability and comfort with uncertainty before accepting such roles.

What is the difference between Commission Only vs Sales Associate?

AspectCommission OnlySales Associate
Payment StructureEarns solely through commissions based on salesTypically receives a base salary plus commissions
Work EnvironmentIndependent, performance-drivenRetail or office setting, team-oriented

Commission Only roles focus solely on sales performance for income, often in independent settings. Sales Associate positions usually combine a base salary with commissions, working in retail or customer service environments. Understanding these differences helps job seekers choose roles aligned with their skills and preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a commission-only sales role, and why are they important?

To succeed in a commission-only sales position, you need a solid grasp of sales techniques, product knowledge, and goal-setting, often demonstrated through prior sales experience or relevant training. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, sales analytics tools, and sometimes industry-specific certifications can be vital. Standout professionals possess resilience, self-motivation, persuasive communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with clients. These skills are crucial because commission-only roles require individuals to consistently generate results and income without a guaranteed base salary, relying entirely on their performance.

What is a commission-only job?

A commission-only job is a position where employees earn income solely based on the sales or deals they close, without a fixed salary or hourly wage. This type of compensation often requires strong sales skills and self-motivation, and income can vary significantly depending on performance.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A commission-only sales role, such as in real estate, high-end sales, or financial advising, can potentially earn $10,000 or more per month without a degree. Success depends on sales skills, network, and performance, with high commissions and a strong client base being key factors.

What are some common challenges faced in a commission-only sales role, and how can I prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in a commission-only sales position is the variability of income, since your earnings depend entirely on your sales performance. This can create pressure to consistently generate leads and close deals, requiring strong self-motivation and resilience. Additionally, you may need to manage your schedule and pipeline independently, as many commission-only roles offer a high level of autonomy. To prepare, develop strong time-management skills, build a reliable prospecting strategy, and create a financial plan to manage periods of lower income. Networking with peers and seeking mentorship can also provide valuable support and insights.

What are commission only jobs?

Commission only jobs are positions where employees or contractors are paid solely based on the sales or deals they close, rather than receiving a regular salary or hourly wage. In these roles, your earnings depend entirely on your performance and ability to generate revenue for the company. This pay structure can offer high earning potential for motivated individuals, but also involves financial risk since there is no guaranteed income. Commission only jobs are common in industries like real estate, insurance, and sales. It's important to understand the compensation structure and evaluate your risk tolerance before accepting a commission only position.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

Commera Funding is hiring one experienced MCA closer to run their own book of business with our funder network behind them. This is a 1099 commission-only contractor role — you set your own pace, we pay you on results.

If you have a proven MCA track record and want to keep 35% of net broker revenue instead of trading commission for a base salary, this seat is built for you.

COMPENSATION

- 35% of net broker revenue on every funded deal you close

- Realistic monthly earnings: $4,000 – $12,000+, fully uncapped

- Paid within 7 days of funder commission clearing

- 1099 Independent Contractor — no tax withholding

WHAT WE PROVIDE

- Funder network covering A, B, C, and D paper

- Fresh leads delivered daily — UCC lists, aged MCA data, live transfers

- CRM, power dialer, US caller ID

- Scripts, objection playbook, submission support

- In-house underwriting team backing you up

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Close MCA deals from leads we provide

- Qualify merchants and read bank statements on the first call

- Collect stips, package clean files, submit to funders

- Negotiate approvals and walk merchants through to funding

- Maintain CRM notes and hit weekly funding KPIs

REQUIREMENTS

- 2+ years of direct MCA / merchant cash advance / business funding sales experience (NON-NEGOTIABLE)

- Proven track record of closed and funded deals — be ready to share monthly volume

- Strong, professional spoken English

- Able to read bank statements and qualify deals independently

- Reliable laptop, wired internet (25+ Mbps), USB headset, quiet workspace

- Willing to sign an Independent Contractor Agreement

- Comfortable with 100% commission, no base, no benefits

PREFERRED

- Existing book of merchants you can bring

- Direct funder relationships

- Bilingual English/Spanish

- Prior W-2 closer experience at an established MCA shop

ABOUT COMMERA FUNDING

We're a US-based commercial financing brokerage helping small businesses across 46 states access $15K – $2M in working capital. We hand-match each application to vetted funders, operate under a strict no-stacking policy, and fund deals in 24–72 hours.

HOW TO APPLY — READ CAREFULLY

Applications that skip these steps will not be reviewed.

1. Subject line of your message must start with the word: FUNDED

2. Record a 2-minute Loom or video covering:

• Your name and where you're based

• MCA track record — shops you've worked, years, monthly funding volume

• Why you want a 1099 commission-only role over W-2

3. In writing (3–4 sentences), handle this objection:

"Your factor rate is way higher than the bank offered me 8% APR."

4. Send resume + Loom link + written rebuttal

We respond within 48 hours. Top applicants get a 30-minute Zoom interview, then onto live leads under contract.

Job Type: Contract

Compensation: Commission only, $4,000 – $12,000 per month estimated
