The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, opened on October 1, 1940, is known as "America's First Superhighway"!  Our mission is to operate a safe, reliable, customer-valued toll road system that supports national mobility and commerce.  The PTC operates a 565-mile system with over 205 million transactions annually.  Together, we are building the highway of the future.

Job Purpose and Summary

This is skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units or systems, equipment and fixtures at various locations for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the HVAC trade. Work is assigned and is viewed by a supervisor through observation of the equipment installed, repaired or maintained and the adherence to American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) practices and standards.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Maintains, repairs, and installs electric motors, relays, contactors, pumps, heaters, fans, HVAC systems, chillers, digital control systems, building automation systems, large scale air handlers, electric services, distribution centers, breaker panels, emergency generators, switch gears, transformers, conduit, and associated wiring.

Monitors HVAC systems and operations and ensures that routine preventive maintenance is performed according to established schedules.

Installs, troubleshoots and repairs HVAC units, including electronic and mechanical components in accordance with established safety procedures of the HVAC trade.

Installs HVAC ductwork, including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.

Installs or repairs fuel and water supply lines.

Conserves, installs and recycles chloroflurocarbon family (CFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants.

Installs or repairs electrical connections to HVAC components.

Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and prints.  Reviews specifications and plans as required for HVAC systems.

Uses hand or power tools while working on HVAC systems.

Installs, inspects, isolates, troubleshoots and repairs HVAC and building automation system malfunctions using various test instruments; operates electrical equipment and systems.

Must be available on call 24/7/365 for emergency response.

Estimates and logs time and materials on work orders.

Utilizes a radio system for transmitting and receiving information.

Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.

Performs related duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.   

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Possession of a valid Freon license (CFC).  

Completion of HVAC technical training at an accredited technical school and three (3) years of HVAC-related experience; 
OR 
completion of a United States Military HVAC training program and three (3) years of HVAC-related experience; 
OR 
five (5) years of documented HVAC experience.

Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading reports. Incumbents must be able to read fine print and fine details with no color deficiencies. Position may demand occasionally working long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or extended work assignments. Frequently lifts and carriers up to 50 pounds of equipment, material, tools.  Occasionally lifts up to 150 pounds without the assistance of a heavy lifting device. Works overhead or in a bending, squatting or kneeling position. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions.  Works in extreme weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, in confined spaces and at heights.  Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
