As of Jun 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for commission game developer in Georgia is $91,591.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,800.00 and $104,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Commission Game Developer position, and why are they important?

A Commission Game Developer needs strong programming abilities, proficiency in game engines like Unity or Unreal, and a portfolio demonstrating completed game projects. Familiarity with version control systems, 2D/3D asset integration, and possibly certifications in game development or computer science are also valuable. Excellent client communication, time management, and adaptability help developers fulfill unique project requirements and deadlines. These skills ensure high-quality deliverables, foster client satisfaction, and enable success in a project-based, commission-driven environment.

How much does an AAA game designer make?

AAA game designers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior designers or those with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially in major gaming hubs or large studios.

What types of clients and projects can a Commission Game Developer typically expect to work with or on?

As a Commission Game Developer, you may be hired by indie studios, startups, educational organizations, or individual entrepreneurs looking to create custom games or interactive experiences. Projects can range from small mobile games and prototypes to more complex PC or web-based titles, often with specific gameplay mechanics or design constraints dictated by the client. You will frequently consult with clients to clarify requirements, provide updates, and iterate on feedback throughout the development process. This variety provides valuable experience across genres and platforms, and can help expand your portfolio and professional network in the gaming industry.

Is 30 too old to get into game dev?

Commission game developers, like many roles in the industry, can start at any age as long as they have the necessary skills, such as programming, design, or art, and a strong portfolio. Age is less important than your ability to learn new tools, adapt, and demonstrate your work, with many professionals entering the field later in life successfully.

Will AI replace game devs?

AI is increasingly used to assist game developers in tasks like procedural content generation and testing, but it is unlikely to fully replace game developers. Human creativity, design skills, and problem-solving remain essential for creating engaging and innovative games. Developers who adapt by integrating AI tools into their workflow can enhance productivity and focus on higher-level design aspects.

What is a Commission Game Developer job?

A Commission Game Developer is a game developer who creates games or game assets on a contractual or commission basis. Instead of working as a full-time employee for a single company, they take on projects from clients or studios, often as freelancers. Their work can include developing entire games, designing specific game mechanics, or creating assets like characters, environments, or music. Payment structures vary and may be based on milestones, revenue sharing, or a flat fee.

What is the 80/20 rule in game development?

In game development, the 80/20 rule suggests that approximately 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts, meaning developers should focus on the most impactful features or tasks to maximize productivity. This principle helps prioritize work on core gameplay elements, bug fixing, or optimization to efficiently improve the game. Understanding this rule can assist a commission game developer in managing time and resources effectively during project development.

Your impact:
  • Lead, coach, and support a small, highly effective team of 4 passionate engineers to foster a high-performance culture of excellence.
  • Take a hands-on approach to the entire software development lifecycle: perform day-to-day project management to ensure successful, on-time releases; demonstrate ownership and accountability for the team’s delivery.
  • Build trusting relationships and collaborate across departments, in particular with product and design, to execute on company strategy.
  • Set the technical direction for the team, drive the evolution of the systems architecture, and make appropriate technology choices. Guide the team in ensuring we are set up architecturally for long term success.
  • Manage the delivery of software using Agile best practices including continuous delivery, continuous integration, and test-driven development.
  • Promote a SMART codebase (Simple, Maintainable, Agile, Refactored, and Tested) for a SAFE product (Secure, Available, Fast, and Easy).
  • Implement processes and metrics that allow the team to be efficient and focused and to ensure that products are market-ready.
  • Enable a culture of creativity, collaboration, speed, innovation, and excellence while continuously elevating the quality and caliber of our engineering organization.
  • Ensure the team fully understands the goals and objectives of AppFolio as a company and how their work fits into the bigger picture.
  • Foster a fun and engaging team culture—keep our tradition of daily standup games alive, where engineers compete for glory (and a free lunch), while building camaraderie.
Skills & Knowledge:
  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related technical discipline
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams during the evolution of the Engineering function from start-up to mid lifecycle.
  • 2+ years of successfully hiring, directly managing, coaching, and retaining world-class engineers.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience leading and contributing to the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of large-scale customer-facing products or high-performance platforms.
  • Well-versed not only in the typical Agile rituals and practices - but also the modern, genuinely agile practices of rapid experimentation and continuous delivery of value.
  • Proficiency with most areas of our tech like Ruby, React, and SQL.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build productive cross-functional relationships and motivate team members. Must have a positive, can-do attitude and value collaboration.
