How does compensation on a commission basis affect the workflow and priorities of a Full Stack Developer?

Working as a Commission Full Stack Developer typically means your earnings are tied directly to project completion or specific deliverables, rather than a fixed salary. This compensation structure encourages you to be highly efficient, prioritize projects with the greatest impact, and collaborate closely with clients or sales teams to understand their needs and timelines. While this can offer greater earning potential and flexibility, it also requires strong time management and self-motivation to consistently secure and deliver on new projects. You may need to balance multiple clients simultaneously and proactively communicate progress to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.

Are full stack devs still in demand?

Full stack developers remain in high demand due to their versatility in handling both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, and Node.js. The role is essential in many industries, and demand is expected to grow as companies prioritize agile, full-spectrum development teams.

Will AI replace full stack dev?

AI is unlikely to fully replace full stack developers, as their role requires complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of user needs that AI cannot replicate. Instead, AI tools can assist developers by automating repetitive tasks and enhancing productivity, allowing them to focus on more strategic aspects of development. Full stack developers who adapt by learning new technologies and integrating AI tools will remain valuable in the evolving tech landscape.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commission Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Full Stack Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web application architecture. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Node.js, or Django), version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is often required, along with a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Strong problem-solving skills, effective time management, and clear client communication are essential soft skills in a commission-based, project-driven environment. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality, full-cycle software solutions while meeting client expectations and deadlines.

How much does a Full Stack Developer charge per hour?

Full Stack Developers typically charge between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Freelancers with specialized skills or certifications may charge higher rates, especially for complex or long-term projects.

Is full stack worth it in 2026?

Full stack developers remain in high demand in 2026 due to their versatility in handling both front-end and back-end development. Strong skills in frameworks like React or Angular, along with knowledge of server-side technologies, can lead to competitive salaries and job stability. Continuous learning and adapting to new tools are essential for long-term success in this role.

What is a Commission Full Stack Developer?

A Commission Full Stack Developer is a software engineer who works on both the front-end and back-end aspects of web or application development, and is compensated primarily through commissions or performance-based payments rather than a fixed salary. They may work as freelancers or contractors, often earning a percentage of sales, project milestones, or successful deployments. This role requires proficiency in multiple programming languages, frameworks, and the ability to manage entire projects from concept to completion. Commission-based arrangements can offer flexible work and higher earning potential, but may also involve variable income and less job stability. Clients hire Commission Full Stack Developers for their technical versatility and results-driven approach.

Job description

Senior Full-Stack Engineer (Rails Monolith + React)

Location: Remote (U.S.)

About Our Client

Our client builds software that powers mission-critical construction lending workflows. The platform is mature, used by real customers, and sits at the intersection of complex operational processes, payments, approvals, and data accuracy. This team values pragmatic builders who can ship, iterate, and improve legacy systems without breaking what already works.

The Role

Our client is hiring a Senior Full-Stack Engineer who has shipped and maintained production applications, someone comfortable moving across database design, API development, backend architecture, and front-end product work.

You'll help define and build new platform capabilities on top of a 6-year-old Rails monolith, improving and extending it with modern patterns while balancing speed, quality, and business constraints.

What You'll Do

  • Collaboratively define, scope, and architect new platform capabilities on top of a mature Rails monolith
  • Extend and improve legacy systemsโ€”adding payments, integrations, and new features in a way that's seamless, secure, and scalable
  • Work directly with databases: write/optimize SQL, design schema migrations, and ensure API payloads are efficient and well-structured
  • Build and maintain web features using React, Hotwire, TypeScript, Tailwind (and potentially mobile-facing work in React Native)
  • Manage background processing and system reliability using Sidekiqโ€”taking a pragmatic approach to infrastructure without overbuying vendor tooling
  • Identify fragile legacy implementations and propose practical migration paths that balance engineering quality with business reality
  • Help establish engineering culture, conventions, and development practices as the team scales
  • Communicate proactively in a fully remote, high-velocity environmentโ€”thinking out loud, asking the right questions, and collaborating through conversation

What Our Client Is Looking For

Required

  • 6+ years of professional full-stack engineering experience (exceptional 4โ€“5 years considered)
  • Strong Ruby on Rails experience, including working inside a mature monolith
  • Comfortable working across backend + frontend, with strong product instincts
  • Solid database fundamentals: schema design, migrations, query optimization, and API efficiency
  • Experience building reliable systems: background jobs, queues, retries, and failure handling (Sidekiq or similar)
  • Clear communicator who thrives in ambiguity and can reason out loud

Bonus Points

  • Experience in construction, fintech, proptech, or any domain requiring deep business learning to build the right product
  • Experience with React Native or mobile-adjacent product surfaces
  • Experience integrating payments and third-party systems in production

Why This Role

  • High-ownership work on a platform that mattersโ€”real customers, real workflows, real outcomes
  • Meaningful engineering challenges: improving a mature codebase, scaling reliability, and modernizing without โ€œrewrite theaterโ€
  • Strong influence on architecture, standards, and how the team builds as it grows
  • Remote culture that rewards proactive communication and practical execution
