What is a commission engineer?

A Commission Engineer is a professional responsible for overseeing the installation, testing, and commissioning of technical systems or equipment, ensuring they function according to design specifications and client requirements. They typically work in industries such as electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or manufacturing, and their duties include troubleshooting issues, performing system checks, and documenting results. Commission Engineers also collaborate with project managers, contractors, and clients to ensure a smooth handover of systems. Their role is critical in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of new or upgraded installations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commission engineer?

To thrive as a Commission Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, problem-solving abilities, and often a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with commissioning software, control systems (such as PLCs and SCADA), and project management tools is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and adaptability are essential soft skills for coordinating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that complex systems are safely and effectively brought online, meeting project specifications and client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by commission engineers during project handover, and how can they be managed?

Commission Engineers often encounter challenges during project handover, such as ensuring all systems are fully operational, documentation is complete, and client staff are properly trained. Unexpected system issues or last-minute changes can require quick problem-solving and clear communication with both clients and internal teams. Proactively maintaining detailed records, conducting thorough testing, and collaborating closely with project managers and clients help ensure a smooth handover and build trust for future projects.

What is the difference between Commission Engineer vs Service Engineer?

AspectCommission EngineerService Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, technical certificationsEngineering or technical diploma, certifications often similar
Work EnvironmentInstallation sites, commissioning projectsOn-site maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs
Employer & IndustryManufacturers, industrial plants, energy sectorEquipment suppliers, industrial, HVAC, machinery

Commission Engineers focus on installing and commissioning new equipment, ensuring systems operate correctly from the start. Service Engineers primarily handle ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of existing systems. While both roles require technical skills and certifications, Commission Engineers are involved at project start-up, whereas Service Engineers support system longevity and performance.

Do commissioning engineers make good money?

Commissioning engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. They often receive additional compensation through overtime, certifications, and specialized skills in systems like HVAC, electrical, or mechanical equipment. Overall, the role offers good earning potential for qualified professionals in engineering fields.

How much money does a commission engineer make?

A commission engineer's salary typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often earn additional compensation through performance-based commissions or bonuses, especially in sales or project management roles involving client installations or system commissioning.

What do commission engineers do?

Commission engineers are responsible for testing, starting up, and ensuring the proper operation of new or modified equipment and systems, often in industrial or manufacturing settings. They troubleshoot issues, verify performance against specifications, and may use tools like control systems and diagnostic software during the commissioning process. Their work ensures that systems are ready for regular operation and meet safety and quality standards.

Job description

Process Engineer

Process Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Process Engineer to design, optimize and scale manufacturing processes that deliver high yield, consistent quality, and efficient throughput. The role focuses on developing robust processes across materials and electrical subsystems, leading cross-functional problem solving, and driving continuous improvement initiatives from lab scale through production. The ideal candidate brings strong process engineering fundamentals and working knowledge of materials engineering and electrical engineering concepts to enable integration of materials behavior and electrical requirements into manufacturable processes.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and optimize manufacturing processes to meet quality, yield, cost and throughput targets.
  • Lead scale-up activities from pilot to production, including process validation, qualification and transfer documentation.
  • Collaborate with materials and electrical engineering teams to integrate material properties and electrical requirements into process flows and component specifications.
  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective action (RCA/CAPA) for process failures; implement long-term countermeasures and verify effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain process control plans, work instructions, SOPs and production documentation.
  • Specify, commission and qualify production equipment; work with vendors on equipment selection, installation and acceptance testing.
  • Use DOE, statistical analysis and process capability metrics (Cp/Cpk) to drive process improvements and reduce variation.
  • Implement Lean and Six Sigma methods to reduce cycle time, scrap and production costs.
  • Train production staff on process requirements, troubleshooting, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and participate in risk assessments and FMEAs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Process Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of practical experience in process development, manufacturing engineering or production support (semiconductor, battery, electronics, medical device or similar industries preferred).
  • Working knowledge of materials engineering concepts (material selection, characterization, failure modes) and electrical engineering fundamentals (basic circuitry, interconnects, insulation, testing considerations).
  • Experience with DOE, statistical process control, root cause analysis and process capability studies.
  • Familiarity with equipment qualification, maintenance practices and control systems (PLC/HMI basics preferred).
  • Practical skills with CAD, process simulation tools, measurement systems and data analysis software (e.g., Minitab, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, strong written and verbal communication skills and experience leading cross-functional teams.
  • Certification or training in Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt), Lean Manufacturing or equivalent is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, manage multiple priorities and travel to manufacturing sites as needed.
