What is a commission-based job?

Commission-based jobs are positions where employees earn all or part of their income based on the sales or deals they close, rather than receiving a fixed salary. In these roles, compensation is typically tied directly to performance, meaning the more you sell or achieve, the more you earn. This structure is common in industries such as real estate, insurance, and sales. Commission-based jobs can offer high earning potential for motivated individuals, but income can be less predictable compared to salaried positions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a commission-based sales role?

Success in a commission-based sales role requires strong sales acumen, negotiation abilities, and a deep understanding of the products or services offered, often supported by a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, point-of-sale systems, and online communication tools is valuable. Exceptional interpersonal skills, resilience, and self-motivation help individuals excel in meeting targets and building lasting client relationships. These competencies are crucial as they directly impact earning potential, customer satisfaction, and long-term business growth in a performance-driven environment.

What are common challenges faced by commission-based professionals, and how can they be managed effectively?

Commission-based roles often come with income variability, as earnings depend directly on performance and sales results. This can be challenging during slower periods or when building a new client base. To manage these challenges, many professionals focus on cultivating strong client relationships, maintaining a robust sales pipeline, and setting realistic financial goals. Additionally, successful commission-based workers often collaborate closely with their teams to share leads and best practices, which can help drive results and stabilize income over time.

Job description

About Savage Bees Meadery

Rooted in the heart of Eastern Oregon, we are a small-batch meadery dedicated to capturing the diverse terroir of our area. We blend our estate honey with cutting-edge techniques to craft an array of mead styles. While we take immense pride in our rigorous standards and dedication to quality, our core philosophy remains simple: stay passionate, have fun, and make a product we truly love.

The Role

We are looking for a high-energy, self-motivated Sales Representative to expand our footprint. This is a 100% commission-based role (with uncapped earning potential) designed for a "hunter" who loves the craft beverage scene and knows how to build lasting relationships with bar managers, bottle shop owners, and restaurant groups.

Your goal is simple: Get our mead onto more taps and more shelves.

What You’ll Do
  • Prospecting: Identify and cold-call new on-premise (bars, restaurants) and off-premise (liquor stores, grocers) accounts in Oregon and Washington states, with the option of expanding your territory as we grow.
  • Relationship Management: Maintain current accounts through regular check-ins and inventory management.
  • Tastings & Education: Potential to participate in special events where you will conduct "sample pours" for buyers and host "mead takeovers" or in-store tastings to drive consumer demand.
  • Brand Ambassadorship: Option to represent us at festivals, farmers' markets, and industry events.
  • Reporting: Track your leads and sales progress, and report to the manager during regularly scheduled meetings and via our tracking spreadsheet.
Who You Are
  • A Natural Connector: You can walk into a busy bar and strike up a conversation with the manager without breaking a sweat.
  • Knowledgeable (or Eager to Learn): You don't need to be a mead expert on Day 1, but you must be passionate about the craft industry (beer, wine, or cider backgrounds are a huge plus).
  • Resilient: You aren't discouraged by a "no." You understand that sales is a numbers game.
  • Organized: You can manage your own schedule and territory effectively.
  • Mobile: Must have a reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license.
  • Legal: Must be 21+ and able to lift 40-50 lbs (cases/kegs).
Why Sell Mead?
  • Market Growth: Mead is one of the fastest-growing segments in the craft beverage industry, with enormous market potential.
  • Unique Selling Point: It’s gluten-free, sustainable, and offers a higher ABV "punch" than beer but a more approachable vibe than wine.
  • Less Competition: While every bar has 20 IPAs, most only have one mead. You’re offering them something truly different.
Compensation & Perks
  • Commission: 7-12% commission on all new and recurring sales in your territory, based on experience and performance.

Note: You must be actively representing Savage Bees Meadery to receive a commission. Compensation is only offered for sales that are tracked and personally facilitated by you on our behalf. You would not be entitled to residual commissions if you leave our service, even if your account is still making purchases from our company.

  • Uncapped Earning: The more you sell, the more you make. No ceilings.
  • Flexible Schedule: Work when you want, where you want.
  • Product Perks: Generous mead discounts and early access to limited releases.
  • Growth Potential: You grow as we grow. The more sales you make, the faster we can increase production.
