Job description

SAIC is seeking a highly motivated Systems Engineer to join our expanding, multi-disciplined team of professionals at our Identity and Data Sciences Laboratory (IDSL) based in Upper Marlboro, MD.  The ideal candidate will be instrumental in identifying, testing, and evaluating novel systems and processes that may improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction of customer field activities. The IDSL team works with technologies that include biometric and identity acquisition and data processing systems, data capture instrumentation and recording systems, and high throughput screening systems.  The IDSL team operates the internationally recognized Maryland Test Facility (MdTF; http://mdtf.org) to carry out both large- and small-scale evaluations. The candidate will join a multi-disciplined team composed of scientists, engineers, and subject matter experts working to design, build, and execute the test cases required to gather and analyze the data needed to make qualitive and quantitative recommendations in support of our customer goals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute test and evaluation plans for new generation hardware and software components and systems and generate technical reports documenting findings.
  • Build and configure computer-based data collection systems by integrating and installing necessary assemblies, sub-assemblies, and software.
  • Setup and configure lighting, power, and other infrastructure in laboratory and field-test environments.
  • Design, fabricate and assemble prototype system components and devices using on-premises CAD modeling software, 3D printers, laser cutters, basic hand and power tools, and other rapid prototyping methods in support of customer concepts of operations and device testing.
  • Develop and execute checklists to monitor laboratory and field infrastructure to ensure reliable operation and detect and repair malfunctions that would impact testing efforts.
  • Perform research to identify and document existing and emerging technologies that help solve customer challenges.
  • Generate technical documents, drawings, and operator/maintenance procedures.
  • Provide technical support services including routine systems maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent military/field experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust requiring U.S. Citizenship.
  • Able to lift 50lbs and safely use step ladders.
  • Understanding of basic computer assembly and setup, software installation, configuration, network connectivity, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in the proper and safe use of basic hand and power tools.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling and printing processes, software, and hardware.
  • Able to generate technical documentation, drawings, operator/maintenance procedures, test plans, and hardware and software recommendations.
  • Knowledgeable in the proper use of handheld test equipment such as DMMs.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to clearly explain and document technical plans, findings, and recommendations.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate with team members as well as interact with customers.
  • Able to iterate and adapt system requirements and designs to changing needs and priorities.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Computer operating system installation, configuration and troubleshooting in Windows and Linux (x64/ARM) environments.
  • Rapid 3D modeling and prototyping using software such as SolidWorks or similar.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers (Arduino/STM32/ESP 8266/32).
  • Proficiency with electronic test equipment for signal measurement and diagnostics.
  • Developing and executing power, data, and network wiring plans.
  • Graphics software experience such as Photoshop, Blender, GIMP.
  • Proficient with electrical prototyping skills such as soldering, drawing electrical diagrams, and disassembly.
