The Opportunity

Aviva Canada Inc. has an excellent opportunity in our Small Medium and Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance business unit. Our Calgary branch is seeking a Commercial Lines P&C Underwriter in an Intermediate level. This role is accountable for driving profitable growth through high-quality underwriting, with a focus on middle market and large commercial accounts across select industry segments. These accounts typically fall within the annual premium range of $25K to $250K.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with internal partners to identify new business opportunities and deliver superior technical expertise to brokers and customers-ensuring risks are priced appropriately. You will also play a key role in mentoring and guiding junior underwriters. We're looking for insightful, business-minded professionals who are passionate about service excellence and committed to driving profitable growth.

What you'll do
  • Underwrite new and renewal Core & MidMarket P&C accounts within delegated authority, ensuring profitable growth.

  • Assess moderate to moderately complex risks and recommend terms, conditions, and pricing.

  • Prepare referrals for risks outside authority with clear recommendations.

  • Build and maintain broker relationships; participate in broker/insured meetings to support new business and renewals.

  • Monitor market conditions and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, portfolio quality, and compliance.

  • Support junior staff through basic coaching when needed.

What you'll bring
  • 3+ years of P&C underwriting experience; CIP preferred or in progress.

  • Strong understanding of underwriting fundamentals, pricing, and policy wording.

  • Proficiency with underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office.

  • Strong communication, relationshipbuilding, and problemsolving skills.

  • Ability to manage workload independently and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.
