How much do commercial diver part time jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for commercial diver part time in the United States is $23.84, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $25.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commercial Diver Part Time, and why are they important?

To excel as a Commercial Diver Part Time, you need strong swimming ability, physical fitness, and certification from an accredited commercial diving school. Familiarity with diving equipment, underwater tools, and safety systems, along with certifications such as ADCI or IMCA, is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe and efficient underwater operations in challenging environments.

What is the difference between Commercial Diver Part Time vs Commercial Diver Full Time?

AspectCommercial Diver Part TimeCommercial Diver Full Time
CertificationsRequired certifications are similar, often including commercial diving and safety certificationsSame certifications as part time, but may require additional specialized training
Work EnvironmentTypically involves shorter shifts, flexible schedules, and part-time projectsLonger shifts, full-time employment, and consistent work schedules
Employment TypePart-time, project-based or seasonal workFull-time, permanent or long-term contracts
Industry UsageUsed in industries like construction, maintenance, and inspection on a part-time basisCommon in the same industries but with full-time commitments

Commercial Diver Part Time and Commercial Diver Full Time share similar certifications and work environments, but differ mainly in employment commitment and schedule flexibility. Part-time divers often work on short-term projects with flexible hours, while full-time divers have longer, more consistent schedules.

What are commercial divers and what do they do part-time?

Commercial divers are professionals trained to perform underwater tasks such as inspection, repair, maintenance, and construction in environments like oceans, lakes, and rivers. Part-time commercial divers typically work on a project or contract basis, which allows them to take on jobs as needed rather than working full-time. Their duties can include underwater welding, salvage, photography, or pipeline inspections. Part-time work is common in this field due to the project-based nature of many diving jobs and the demand for specialized skills. Safety and certification are key aspects of the profession.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time commercial divers, and how can they prepare for them?

Part-time commercial divers often face unique challenges such as maintaining physical fitness and technical proficiency despite working fewer hours than their full-time counterparts. They may also need to adapt quickly to varying work environments and different project teams, as assignments can range from underwater inspections to repairs. Staying up-to-date with certifications and safety protocols is crucial, as is networking within the industry to secure consistent part-time opportunities. Being proactive about ongoing training and maintaining strong communication with dive supervisors can help overcome these challenges.
