What is an Air Diver job?

An Air Diver is a commercial diver who performs underwater tasks while breathing compressed air supplied from the surface. Their work includes underwater inspections, maintenance, construction, welding, and salvage operations in industries like offshore oil and gas, marine construction, and infrastructure repair. Air Divers use helmets, umbilical air supply systems, and specialized tools to safely operate in underwater environments. They must be trained in diving safety protocols and often work in challenging conditions. Certification from organizations like the ADCI or IMCA is typically required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Air Diver position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Air Diver, you need a solid understanding of diving techniques, underwater safety, and equipment maintenance, usually backed by commercial diving certification such as IMCA or ADCI. Proficiency with surface-supplied air systems, decompression protocols, and specialized tools for underwater construction or inspection is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with topside teams are standout traits in this field. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring personal safety, project efficiency, and successful teamwork during challenging underwater operations.

What kinds of work environments and projects can Air Divers typically expect to encounter?

Air Divers most often work in dynamic environments such as offshore oil rigs, harbors, dams, and shipyards, performing tasks like underwater inspections, maintenance, welding, and salvage operations. The work frequently involves collaborating with surface support teams, including supervisors and tender staff, to coordinate safe and effective dives. Divers may work flexible hours, including nights or weekends, to accommodate project timelines and weather-dependent conditions. Over time, experienced Air Divers can progress into supervisory roles, specialized technical positions, or safety management within the diving industry.
