What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commercial Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commercial Designer, you need strong skills in visual design, spatial planning, and a relevant degree in interior, graphic, or industrial design. Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D modeling tools, along with knowledge of building codes or LEED certification, is often required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for understanding client needs and collaborating with teams. These abilities ensure functional, innovative, and visually compelling commercial spaces that meet client goals and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Commercial Design vs Interior Design?

AspectCommercial DesignInterior Design

Industry UsageUsed by architects, developers, retail chainsUsed by homeowners, property managers, hospitality industry

Commercial Design focuses on creating functional, aesthetic spaces for businesses and public environments, often requiring knowledge of building codes and large-scale planning. Interior Design, meanwhile, emphasizes personal and aesthetic aspects of indoor spaces, including residential and smaller commercial projects. While both fields share design principles and certifications, their work environments and client needs differ significantly.

How does a Commercial Designer typically collaborate with clients and other team members during a project?

Commercial Designers play a central role in project collaboration, often acting as a bridge between clients, architects, engineers, and contractors. They start by gathering client requirements and translating them into creative, functional designs that meet both aesthetic and business goals. Throughout the project, they attend regular meetings, provide design updates, and coordinate with suppliers and construction teams to ensure that the final outcome aligns with the client's vision and budget. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as commercial design projects often require balancing diverse stakeholder expectations.

What is commercial design?

Commercial design is a field of design focused on creating visually appealing and functional spaces, products, or materials for businesses and organizations. This includes designing interiors for offices, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial spaces, as well as branding materials, packaging, and advertisements. The goal of commercial design is to enhance the customer experience, promote a company’s brand, and improve the efficiency and aesthetics of business environments.

  • Serve as a technical resource within the commercial design team, assisting with design questions, code interpretation, and troubleshooting
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of colleagues' work to ensure accuracy, constructability, and code compliance
  • Clearly communicate design intent, assumptions, and constraints to internal teams and external partners, including project managers, construction teams, utilities, and AHJs
  • Provide technical guidance to junior designers through reviews, feedback, and informal training
  • Contribute ideas and feedback on design standards, templates, tools, and workflows in partnership with the Commercial Director of Design and Engineering and peers
  • Coordinate with external engineering vendors as needed to support project delivery

Requirements
Your areas of knowledge and expertise...
  • 3+ years of experience designing grid-tied commercial and/or multifamily solar projects, including solar-plus-storage
  • Deep understanding of commercial PV system design, component selection, and production modeling
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Excel, with experience using tools such as Helioscope, Aurora, PV Watts, NREL SAM, PVsyst, or similar
  • Experience producing utility- and AHJ-ready plan sets, including calculations, details, and as-built documentation
  • Ability to clearly explain technical concepts and design decisions to a range of audiences
  • A collaborative working style that values shared problem-solving, consensus-building, and alignment across fields
  • Strong attention to detail and a quality-focused mentality
  • Ability to exercise sound technical judgment while working within established standards, processes, and decision frameworks
