Job Description The Indiana State Police (ISP) Legal Office Externship Program is an observational and experiential program designed for law school students who are pursuing a career in law. This opportunity provides a learning environment based on on-the-job experience while working closely with Indiana State Police staff and State Troopers in all realms of law enforcement today. Externs will gain an understanding of the daily operational demands of the Indiana State Police from both an administrative and field enforcement perspective.
All interested students must complete an application in its entirety as well as an interview with the Legal Office attorneys. The Indiana State Police will review externship requests on a one-on-one basis. The ISP Externship Program is unpaid.
ISP will host one extern per semester including the Summer Semester. Upon receipt of multiple requests, ISP will use required criteria for evaluation, giving preference to higher GPAs and seniority. Job Duties The Legal Extern may be required to: Provide legal information to Department Commanders and personnel concerning legal matters such as criminal and traffic law enforcement procedures, civil liability matters, administrative investigations, pre-trial, trial and post-trial judicial proceedings.
Inform, advise and assist Department personnel in substantive and procedural due process areas. Conduct legal research on current case and statutory law. Serve as a liaison between the Department, the Office of the Indiana Attorney General and various other members of the criminal justice system.
Answer legal inquiries from Department Commanders and personnel. Draft and/or Review outgoing legal correspondence upon request of Department Commanders. Process initial claims on Department litigation as required.
Draft discovery responses on Department litigation to assist the Office of the Attorney General. Research current case and statutory law. Draft legal opinions, memorandums and search warrants.
Draft enforcement aids applicable to current criminal law and law enforcement procedures. Serve as a liaison between Department Commanders, personnel and prosecutors. Provide legal assistance in Department criminal investigations.
Perform other duties as required Job Qualifications The Indiana State Police sets very high standards for its employees as a whole, and this standard is expected of any extern as well. Minimum standards will be reviewed, including but not limited to the following criteria for internship consideration: MINIMUM STANDARDS US citizen Minimum 18 years of age No juvenile or adult criminal arrests or convictions Undergraduate Degree -Enrolled in an ABA accredited law school or an in-state online JD program Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale at an accredited college or university Must be for college credit Valid driver's license Have operating telephone service (either residential or cellular) Current e-mail account for electronic correspondence In addition to these minimum standards, each student must submit to a driver's license check, a criminal history check, a sex offender registry check, and a local wants and warrants check. The student will be responsible for transportation to and from designated meeting areas
The student must provide a telephone number for notification of any updates as needed. SCHEDULING The Indiana State Police will work with the extern to meet requirements dictated by each student's college or university. Hours over the required number of hours may be counted toward Pro Bono hours.
Externs will coordinate their schedule with the General Counsel, or their designee. Police work is a 24/7 job and may require evenings and weekend work. Weather and criminal incidents may also affect the schedule.
Externs must be flexible to allow for changes. INTERN SAFETY & SECURITY Law enforcement by its very nature is an inherently dangerous profession. The Indiana State Police will take every possible precaution to ensure the safety of every extern.
No matter how well trained or prepared one is, circumstances arise where danger must be dealt with. Every extern must sign a waiver of liability from the Indiana State Police. The intern is not "employed" by the Indiana State Police in any fashion.
Externs are not covered by the Indiana State Police insurance plan. The Indiana State Police will not be liable for the actions of the extern acting outside the scope of the responsibilities defined or beyond the direction of the responsible attorney they are assigned to. Externs must also sign a Non-Disclosure Form from the Indiana State Police.
Externs may be exposed to confidential information and must not distribute said information. Externs may be deposed for testimony in court reference events that were witnessed. Externs will have no law enforcement authority.
Externs will not be armed. Externs CANNOT carry any type of weapon, even with a valid permit.
