The City of Wylie's Building Inspections Division is seeking a Plumbing Inspector, the selected applicant will perform inspections for residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance with codes and zoning ordinances.
SUPERVISION
Supervision is provided by the Chief Building Official.
This position will work four ten hour days each week.
Essential Job Functions
  • Reviews residential building plans and specifications and performs on-site inspections to verify compliance with code requirements including: quality of materials and methods of construction for plumbing, mechanical, electrical installations, zoning requirements and other construction work.
  • Requires corrections be made when deficiencies exist. May assist builders and owners in determining how corrections are to be made to ensure conformance with regulations.
  • Keeps simple records of inspections made and inspection results.
  • Answers technical code questions and furnishes information to the public (citizens, builders, developers, architects and engineers) regarding the requirements of plumbing and mechanical codes and zoning ordinances.
  • Assists with the issuance of permits for construction and determination of applicable permit fees.
  • Investigates complaints, issues court citations for violations, and attends court when violations are filed.
  • Interacts with citizens, builders, developers, and design professionals regarding inquiries, complaints and recommendations.
  • Suggests maintenance and upgrades of codes and ordinances to the Chief Building Official as required.
  • Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Informs supervisor of necessary work activities.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Driving record must be in compliance with City policy. Must have a current and valid Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) Plumbing Inspector License.
Certification(s) as a Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, or Combination Inspector by International Code Council (ICC) preferred. Other nationally recognized Code Body certifications may be considered. Must have at least six months extensive working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction including heating/air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems.
Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

  • Retirement benefits with Texas Municipal Retirement System. Contributions by payroll deduction. Employee contributes at 7% level. City matches 200% of employee contribution. Mandatory.
  • Deferred compensation - Nationwide and Edward Jones. The City does not contribute. Employee contributions by pre and post-tax payroll deduction. Optional.
  • Health/Dental/Vision/Prescription insurance PPO and HDHP/HSA plans. PPO - Employee pays $30 per pay period for employee only coverage and 60% of dependent premiums, the City covers 40% of dependent premiums. HDHP/HSA - City pays full premium costs for employee only coverage and 50% of dependent premiums.
  • Flexible Spending Account - allows for pre-tax deduction for eligible medical expenses as well as dependent care expenses. Optional.
  • Health Savings Account with a High Deductible Health Plan - City contributes $1000 for employee only coverage and $200 for employee + one dependent or more coverage.
  • Life insurance - 2x annual salary through New York Life. Fully paid by City and 1x annual salary through TMRS. Total of 3x annual base salary.
  • Long-Term Disability for all full-time City employees.
  • Thirteen paid holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and one floating holiday.
  • Vacation - Earn three weeks of vacation in the first year.
  • Sick leave accrues each full pay period.
  • Sick leave conversion to vacation leave (once per year in January).
  • Sick leave buy back (if budget allows; once per year).
  • Bereavement leave, military leave, jury duty leave.
  • Longevity pay $8 per month of service; paid once per year.

  • Tuition reimbursement - $2,000 per year.
  • Direct Deposit - City of Wylie Payroll will deposit employee paycheck to any bank accepting wire transfers.
