Job description

Salary: $50,000/year

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, one of the nations oldest and most frequented historical public gardens, prides itself on the ability to create immersive visual experiences through their gardens and landscaping. The Color Display Manager is responsible for managing the color aspects of the Garden as it relates to annual, perennial, and shrub color. This includes all color displays on the property, including but not limited to, planting beds, containers, hanging baskets, and special displays.


What you will be doing:

  • Manages the overall programs as it relates to the color display function
  • Sets standards, defines goals. Monitors and evaluates progress as it relates to the color display elements in the Garden, making recommendations and adjusting course as needed
  • Collaborates with the Director of Horticulture throughout the year to define directions in the future color displays
  • Supervises the color display garden staff to include scheduling, training, professional development, staff performance assessment, and budgeting
  • Promotes the Gardens activities and manages volunteers as it relates to the color display function
  • Plays a key role in the design development, installation, and overall maintenance of all color displays
  • Plays a key role in the visioning and development of future color displays
  • Performs all other duties as requested or assigned as needed


Who you are:

  • You have an Associates or Bachelors degree in Horticulture or similar field and 3-5+ years experience in horticulture/gardening/nature management. Experience within a public garden a plus!
  • Youre passionate about horticulture and have an in-depth knowledge of horticultural best practices, plants, and garden maintenance using horticultural disciplines
  • You have 2-4+ years experience as a people manager, and have the ability to manage a diverse, on-site workforce
  • You are a year-round gardener and have the ability to work in all seasons and weather conditions to perform activity related to planting and care
  • You have a valid drivers license to drive and operate necessary equipment and have the ability to do the following: lift 20-50lbs on a regular basis, stand and/or kneel for long periods of time to perform gardening tasks, and climb a 12 ladder to perform tasks as needed
  • Youve got excellent communication skills, and the ability to use available technology as needed
  • As Magnolia is a tourist attraction, this position may require long-days and/or work on the weekends as needed.
