Job description

Enterprise Data Steward
Remote
Contract
"Job Summary
The Enterprise Data Steward is a centralized role within the Enterprise Data Governance (EDG) organization, responsible for executing day to day data stewardship activities for Data Domains and Data Products where the business is unable to dedicate sufficient stewardship capacity. This role ensures that enterprise data assets are discoverable, well defined, trusted, and compliant by applying data governance operating model, standards, and controls. The Data Steward serves as an extension of the business, partnering with Data Owners, Data Product Owners, Technical Custodians, and Technology teams to translate governance policy into operational practice across structured and, where applicable, unstructured data.
Key Responsibilities
Centralized Stewardship Coverage
• Perform Data Domain and Data Product stewardship activities on behalf of business areas that lack available or sustained stewardship resources.
• Act as the primary day to day steward for assigned domains and products while maintaining clear accountability with designated Data Owners.
• Balance stewardship coverage across multiple domains and products, prioritizing work based on risk, regulatory exposure, and business impact.
Metadata & Governance Tooling (Collibra & ServiceNow)
• Create, maintain, and review business metadata in Collibra, including definitions, business rules, classifications, sensitivity labels, usage context, and known limitations.
• Ensure metadata completeness and consistency for enterprise data assets surfaced through data catalog and discovery ecosystem.
Data Product Readiness & Certification Support
• Support the documentation and governance readiness of Data Products by ensuring required metadata, ownership, and stewardship artifacts are in place.
• Prepare Data Products for governance checkpoints such as review, certification, and recertification by coordinating with Data Product Owners and Data Governance.
Policy, Risk & Compliance Alignment
• Apply data governance policies, standards, and controls related to privacy, security, retention, and regulatory requirements.
• Support audit readiness by maintaining stewardship documentation and evidence required for internal and external reviews.
• Escalate risks, non compliance trends, or control gaps to Data Governance leadership as appropriate.
Unstructured Data Governance (Preferred / As Needed)
• Support stewardship and governance of unstructured data assets (e.g., documents, presentations, emails, and collaboration content) in alignment with policies.
• Assist with metadata, classification, retention, and discoverability requirements for unstructured content repositories.
• Partner with Data Governance and Technology teams to promote scalable governance practices for unstructured data.
Enablement & Stewardship Maturity
• Educate business partners on stewardship expectations, governance standards, and proper use of Collibra and related tools.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of stewardship processes, templates, and operational playbooks.
• Promote consistent stewardship practices that reduce reliance on ad hoc governance support over time."
"• Hands on experience performing data stewardship, metadata management, or data governance in an enterprise environment.
• Strong understanding of aligned role distinctions (Data Domain Owner, Data Domain Steward, Technical Custodian, Data Product Owner, Data Product Steward).
• Demonstrated ability to communicate data and governance concepts clearly to non technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience governing or supporting unstructured data (documents, collaboration tools, content repositories).
• Familiarity with Collibra (steward or power user experience preferred).
• Background in financial services or other highly regulated industries.
Core Competencies
• Enterprise stewardship execution
• Metadata rigor and discipline
• Risk based prioritization
• Business partnership and influence
• Governance enablement without delivery friction"
