What is a college influencer?

College influencers are students or recent graduates who use their social media presence to promote brands, products, or campus events to their peers. They collaborate with companies to create authentic content, often sharing their experiences and opinions with a large student audience. Brands work with college influencers to reach the college demographic in a relatable and engaging way. This role often includes perks like free products, paid partnerships, and opportunities to develop marketing skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a college influencer?

To thrive as a College Influencer, you need strong content creation skills, an understanding of social media platforms, and a knack for personal branding, typically supported by a solid online presence and engagement metrics. Familiarity with tools like Instagram, TikTok, Canva, and basic analytics platforms is essential for producing and tracking successful campaigns. Creativity, authenticity, and excellent communication are standout soft skills for connecting with audiences and brands. These skills and qualities are crucial for building trust, growing a following, and delivering impactful promotional content in a competitive digital landscape.

What challenges do college influencers face when balancing academic responsibilities with brand partnerships?

College Influencers often juggle tight academic schedules alongside content creation and brand commitments. Student Section
Student Section Personality & Influencer
Content Innovation Lab | McClatchy
Are you ready to turn your passion, expertise and charisma into high-impact content that inspires and connects? McClatchy's Content Innovation Lab is searching for a dynamic personality and influencer to become the voice of The Student Section - our next-generation college sports brand focusing on the culture of fandom. We're looking for a bold, personality-driven content creator with men's and women's collegiate sports expertise.
At McClatchy, we're fusing our 169-year legacy of trusted journalism with the energy of today's most engaging creators. As the face of The Student Section, you'll deliver content that resonates with devoted college sports fans - everything from Blue Blood basketball programs to the latest in NIL, recruiting and coaching changes. You'll spotlight campus traditions, March Madness, football playoffs and the vibrant rivalries that define the college sports landscape.
What You'll Do:
  • Serve as the personality and voice of The Student Section, connecting authentically with high-loyalty fan communities and bringing the excitement of college sports to life.
  • Collaborate with creative teams to develop, produce and distribute compelling content - vertical videos, live streams and fan features - across digital and social platforms.
  • Leverage data, audience signals and AI-powered tools to guide your content strategy, always keeping the human connection and journalistic integrity at the center.
  • Experiment with new formats, engage fans through contests and interactive features, and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, digital environment.
  • Help build McClatchy's digital future, where talent and technology come together to deliver quality content and unforgettable audience experiences.

What we'll bring:
  • The anticipated pay range for this position is between 86k - 106k a year. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on the job-related knowledge, department equity, skills, experience and relevant education.
  • Enjoy competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, 401(k) with match, generous PTO, wellness resources and more. For more information on McClatchy's benefit plan, please visit McClatchyLivewell.com

If you're a bold, idea-driven creator with topic authority, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for connecting with college sports fans, we want you on our team and in the stands.
