The SUNY Geneseo Department of Residence Life, in partnership with our residents, cultivates an inclusive living and learning environment that sparks engagement, encourages and fosters well being, and inspires a feeling of belonging for all students who live in our community.
The Area Coordinator is a professional position in the SUNY Geneseo Division of Student and Campus Life. As such, the Area Coordinator is expected to fulfill their specific responsibilities in a way that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the articulated mission and goals of their department, the division of Student & Campus Life, and the College. Area Coordinators are also expected to adhere to the professional and ethical standards promulgated by the professional association with which their department is affiliated. Area Coordinators must display the ability to foster diverse and inclusive relationships, as well as a high degree of cultural humility.
Area Coordinators (AC) are live-in professional Residence Life staff members. An Area Coordinator's primary duty is to oversee and develop multiple residence halls (two to four) as residential educators, informed supervisors, connection builders, creative managers, and accurate record-keepers. Where applicable, some ACs will supervise a Residence Director as well. The AC position requires flexibility of work hours, including evening and weekend work. Area Coordinators do not have a traditional 8:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. work schedule. As live-on professionals, ACs are considered "essential College personnel," and must have skills in crisis management. Each AC participates in a night and weekend duty schedule, requiring periodic overnight monitoring of a duty phone, the ability to respond to emergency situations, and other related residential duties. Due to the nature of this work, Area Coordinators are required to reside in the apartment provided and assigned by the College via the Department of Residence Life.
Responsibilities include informal counseling and co-curricular education of residential students, supervision and development of a student staff of resident assistants, and oversight of residential operations and facilities. Successful Area Coordinators will have academic interests and professional experiences related to residential education, student learning and development, leadership development, civic and social engagement, and the needs of students transitioning to college, particularly first-year and transfer students.
The Area Coordinator role is a three-year position designed to support the professional growth of emerging housing and residential life professionals. Through increasing levels of responsibility, intentional supervision, and leadership development opportunities, the AC position serves as a foundational step for individuals seeking to advance their careers in housing, residence life, or student affairs.
