What is a College BCBA?

College BCBAs, or Board Certified Behavior Analysts working in a college setting, are professionals who apply the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to support students, faculty, or programs within higher education institutions. Their responsibilities may include developing behavioral interventions for students with disabilities, training staff on ABA techniques, supporting inclusive educational practices, and conducting research on behavior analysis in academic settings. College BCBAs may also collaborate with other campus services to enhance student success and well-being.

What are some typical challenges a College BCBA might face when supporting students in a higher education setting?

A College BCBA often encounters challenges such as balancing individualized support for students with autism or other behavioral needs while also promoting independence and self-advocacy skills appropriate for college-aged learners. Navigating the unique campus environment requires strong collaboration with faculty, disability services, and student life staff to ensure accommodations are effectively implemented. Additionally, College BCBAs must stay attuned to the evolving academic and social pressures students face, adapting behavioral interventions to suit a more adult, self-directed population.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a College BCBA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a College Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), you need a graduate degree in behavior analysis or a related field, BCBA certification, and a strong understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles. Familiarity with data collection software, progress monitoring tools, and behavior intervention planning systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills help BCBAs effectively support students, faculty, and interdisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for designing effective interventions, ensuring student progress, and fostering a positive learning environment in higher education settings.

What is the difference between College Bcba vs Bcba?

CriteriaCollege BcbaBcba
Required CredentialsCollege coursework, supervised fieldwork, BCBA exam eligibilityMaster's degree, supervised experience, BCBA certification
Work EnvironmentEducational settings, clinics, home-based programsBehavior analysis agencies, clinics, schools
Industry UsageOften used in academic or training contextsProfessional certification for practicing behavior analysts

The main difference is that a College Bcba typically refers to the educational pathway or coursework towards becoming a BCBA, while Bcba refers to the certified professional who has met all certification requirements. Both are related to behavior analysis, but the Bcba is the credential that qualifies someone to practice independently in the field.

What else can I do with a college BCBA degree?

A college BCBA degree qualifies individuals to work as Board Certified Behavior Analysts, providing behavioral assessments and interventions across various settings such as schools, clinics, and homes. It also allows for roles in program development, supervision of behavior technicians, and consulting on behavioral issues, often requiring supervision hours and certification renewal. Additionally, BCBAs can pursue research, training, or leadership positions within the field of applied behavior analysis.

Department Summary

The College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences (PAHS) at the University of North Texas prepares graduates to address complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, exercise physiology and urban design.
We have eight academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Kristin Farmer Autism Center, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, the UNT Work Inclusion and Supported Employment (UNTWISE) program, UNT ELEVAR, and several professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.
Drawing on UNT's trail blazing heritage as the first graduate program in the nation to be accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis, and housed in UNT's College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences, the UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center (KFAC) provides clinical services to support learning, development, community participation, and quality of life of individuals on the autism spectrum. In addition to taking excellent care of children with autism and their families, KFAC is equally committed to helping young professionals build careers in autism (incl. UNT students from many academic departments and programs), and conducting research to help scale evidence-based practices in community settings.

Position Overview

The UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center (KFAC) is seeking a full time Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to provide high quality clinical services to children across early and middle childhood with autism and related developmental disabilities. The BCBA in this role plays an important part in supporting the professional development of emerging clinicians through structured supervision, behavioral skills training, and mentorship within the clinical setting.
