How much do collaborating psychiatrist jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for collaborating psychiatrist in the United States is $259,497.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $212,000.00 and $317,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a collaborating psychiatrist typically work with advanced practice providers such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants?

A Collaborating Psychiatrist often oversees and supports advanced practice providers (APPs) like psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants by reviewing treatment plans, providing case consultations, and ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices. The psychiatrist may meet with APPs regularly—either in person or virtually—to discuss complex cases, offer guidance on medication management, and review documentation for compliance. This collaborative relationship allows APPs to practice at the top of their licensure while ensuring patients receive high-quality psychiatric care. The structure and frequency of collaboration may vary depending on state regulations and the healthcare organization's policies.

What is a collaborating psychiatrist?

Collaborating Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry and work in partnership with other healthcare professionals, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants, to provide mental health care. Their role often includes supervising, consulting, and collaborating with these providers to ensure high-quality and effective treatment for patients. They may review patient cases, co-sign treatment plans, and offer clinical guidance, especially in states where nurse practitioners must have a formal agreement with a psychiatrist to prescribe medications or deliver psychiatric care. This collaborative arrangement helps expand access to mental health services, particularly in areas with a shortage of psychiatrists.

What is the difference between Collaborating Psychiatrist vs Consulting Psychiatrist?

AspectCollaborating PsychiatristConsulting Psychiatrist
CredentialsMedical degree, psychiatric license, often board-certifiedMedical degree, psychiatric license, often board-certified
Work EnvironmentWorks directly with patients, part of treatment teamProvides expert advice, may review cases without direct patient contact
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, clinics, mental health facilitiesLegal, insurance, or administrative settings, hospitals

Both roles require similar credentials and are used within healthcare settings. A Collaborating Psychiatrist actively participates in patient care, while a Consulting Psychiatrist offers expert opinions without direct patient involvement. Understanding these differences helps clarify their distinct functions in mental health treatment and healthcare systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a collaborating psychiatrist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Collaborating Psychiatrist, you need a medical degree, board certification in psychiatry, and a valid state license. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telepsychiatry platforms, and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills are vital for effectively supervising and supporting nurse practitioners or physician assistants. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality mental health care and seamless interdisciplinary teamwork in clinical practice.
