Cold Case Analyst information

What is a cold case analyst?

Cold case analysts are professionals who review and investigate unsolved criminal cases, often years or decades old. They analyze evidence, review case files, and use modern forensic technology to identify new leads or re-examine old ones. Their work often involves collaborating with law enforcement officers, forensic experts, and sometimes victims' families. The goal is to bring resolution to cases that have remained unsolved and provide closure for those affected.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cold case analyst?

To thrive as a Cold Case Analyst, you need a background in criminal justice or forensic science, strong analytical abilities, and experience with investigative procedures. Proficiency in crime analysis software, forensic databases, and evidence management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, persistence, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for uncovering new leads and collaborating with law enforcement teams. These skills enable analysts to methodically review complex cases, identify overlooked evidence, and support successful case resolution.

What are some common challenges faced by cold case analysts when reviewing decades-old cases?

Cold Case Analysts often encounter challenges such as incomplete or degraded evidence, outdated investigative methods, and limited availability of witnesses due to the passage of time. Additionally, they may need to familiarize themselves with historical records and collaborate closely with forensic experts to re-examine old evidence with modern technology. Overcoming these obstacles requires persistence, strong analytical skills, and effective teamwork with law enforcement agencies and other specialists.

What is the difference between Cold Case Analyst vs Crime Scene Investigator?

AspectCold Case AnalystCrime Scene Investigator
Required CredentialsCriminal justice degree, forensic training, analytical skillsCriminal justice or forensic science degree, evidence collection training
Work EnvironmentOffice setting, data analysis, case reviewOn-site at crime scenes, evidence collection labs
Employer & IndustryLaw enforcement agencies, cold case unitsPolice departments, forensic labs
Common Search & ComparisonAnalyzing unresolved cases, case reviewCollecting evidence, scene investigation

While both roles support criminal investigations, a Cold Case Analyst primarily reviews and analyzes unresolved cases using data and forensic reports, often working in an office environment. In contrast, a Crime Scene Investigator actively visits crime scenes to collect evidence and document findings. Both positions require a background in criminal justice or forensic science and serve different but complementary functions within law enforcement agencies.

How to become a cold case analyst?

To become a cold case analyst, typically a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, forensic science, or a related field is required. Relevant skills include investigative techniques, data analysis, and familiarity with forensic tools; some positions may also require experience in law enforcement or criminal investigations.

Job description

Mission Lane is combining the power of data, technology, and exceptional service to pave a clear way forward for millions of people on the path to financial success. By attracting top talent and leveraging cutting-edge technology, we're enabling people to unlock real financial progress. Sound like a mission you can get behind?

We're looking for a Principal Business Analyst to shape how new customers find Mission Lane, reporting to the Director of Growth.

The impact you'll make:

Getting approved for a credit card is often someone's first step toward building credit, and that can put a car, a home, or whatever's next within their reach. As the Principal Business Analyst, Growth, you will decide where and how we spend so more people find Mission Lane when they are ready for that next step. You'll manage test investments at a meaningful scale, weighing the credit risk on each one, and you'll run the day-to-day strategy and relationship with one of our biggest affiliate partners.

Mission Lane is still young, but we've landed in an exciting, stable phase of growth. We're still building, but we've already established a solid foundation. There's never been a better time to learn and grow right along with us.

As Principal Business Analyst, Growth, you will:
  • Design and size acquisition tests: Whether that's a new channel, a new customer segment, or a new offer, you'll make the call on how big a swing is worth taking.
  • Analyze credit risk before a launch: Determine what the downside looks like if a test underperforms, and whether that downside is one we can live with while we learn. You'll review the biggest bets with your manager before they go live.
  • Own third-party relationships: Manage the day-to-day operations of our external partnerships.
  • Optimize performance: Work with acquisition partners to keep channels performing, managing everything from placement and pricing to the underlying data terms.
  • Monitor live tests: Track performance in real-time so you catch a test running hot on risk or cold on response before it burns through its budget.
  • Partner cross-functionally: Work alongside engineering, product, and marketing to launch tests with net-new products or capabilities.
  • Communicate with executives: Share your strategy and results directly with senior leadership.
You'll thrive in this role if:
  • You've spent time in financial services, so weighing credit risk, compliance, and regulatory considerations into a decision isn't new territory for you.
  • You're comfortable being accountable for real money: you can make the case for a test's exposure as confidently as you can make the case for its upside.
  • You're curious enough to dig into the reasoning behind your own analysis, down to the assumptions it's built on, so you understand it at an elemental level.
  • You take ownership of your work end-to-end, catching your own mistakes before they compound.
  • You can explain a business problem clearly enough that someone outside your immediate team can easily follow your thinking.
Minimum qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in a highly analytical role.
  • Experience in the financial services industry.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in economics, finance, engineering, mathematics, or a similarly quantitative field, with a strong academic record.
  • A track record of solving open-ended business problems: framing the question, forming a hypothesis, working through the data, and defending your recommendation to stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in SQL, Python, or similar tools for data analysis.
  • Ability to travel ~4–6+ times per year for high-quality in-person collaboration.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience working with credit cards or other consumer lending products.
  • Experience helping scale a business in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Strong SQL or Python skills.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cursor, etc.).

Compensation:

Annual full-time starting base salary range: $118,000 - $135,000

This role is eligible for additional compensation in the forms of participation in our annual incentive and equity programs.

Pay is based on factors such as work experience, education, certification(s), training, skills, and competencies related to the role. Mission Lane also offers a comprehensive benefits plan, which includes paid time off, 401(k) match, a monthly wellness stipend, health/dental/vision insurance options, disability coverage, paid parental leave, flexible spending account (for childcare and healthcare), life insurance, and a remote-first work environment.

About Mission Lane:

Founded in December 2018, Mission Lane is a purpose-driven fintech company based in the U.S., with headquarters in Richmond, Virginia.

It all started with a realization:  nearly fifty percent of the adult population in the U.S. doesn't have access to a clear line of credit. Most traditional credit card companies either overlook or overcharge this group because they have less-than-perfect credit scores or no scores at all. We decided this just wouldn't do.

In partnership with our sponsor banks, we offer credit cards under the Mission Lane brand name, with better, clearer terms, and a more refined customer experience than the alternatives available to people working hard to improve their credit. To date, over four million consumers have chosen Mission Lane, earning high customer ratings on Credit Karma for its market segment and industry leading Net Promoter scores.

Mission Lane has cumulatively raised over $600 million of equity from leading investors, including Invus Opportunities, QED Investors, LL Funds, funds affiliated with Oaktree Capital Management, and other leading investors.

Our commitment to a workplace built on respect and dignity is guided by our core value of Unity. We believe that everyone plays a vital role in our shared purpose, and we actively cultivate an environment where all individuals have the opportunity to do their best work. By fostering a culture of empathy and collaboration, we create a strong sense of belonging and support for every team member.

Mission Lane is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other protected status.

Mission Lane provides reasonable accommodations to applicants who need them for medical or religious reasons, as required by law.  Applicants can initiate an accommodation request by contacting peopleexperience@missionlane.com.

Mission Lane is not sponsoring new applicant employment authorization and please, no third-party recruiters.

Application Integrity:

Our cardholders trust us with their financial well-being, and this trust starts with the integrity of the people on our team. We're looking for team members who share our dedication to transparency and truth. Please verify that the information in your application is accurate and complete.

Providing any information to Mission Lane that is not completely truthful at any point during the application or hiring process may result in removal from the hiring process, disqualification from future opportunities, withdrawal of an offer or other sanctions for candidates and, in addition for employees, disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
