WORK TYPE: Hybrid - 4 days onsite / 1 day remote

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

Varsity Brands is building a modern, unified digital platform that powers the full experience of sport and spirit, enabling seamless workflows across product configuration, ordering, fulfillment, and customer engagement. This platform is built on scalable, API-driven services and shared platform capabilities that support reusable solutions across the enterprise.

The Software Engineer II (SE II) role is a fully productive, professional engineer responsible for designing, building, and delivering software solutions with independent ownership and execution accountability. This role contributes directly to platform development by building backend services, APIs, and system components that support scalable, high-performing digital experiences.

Impact of the Role

  • Delivers scalable services and features that power Varsity Brands' digital platform

  • Improves engineering velocity and system reliability through high-quality development practices

  • Contributes to platform consistency, reuse, and performance across engineering teams

  • Supports the transition to scalable, API-driven services and shared platform capabilities

  • Drives adoption of shared platform capabilities through consistent, reusable service development

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs aligned to platform architecture

  • Own end-to-end delivery of features, from design through deployment and support

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, identifying root causes and implementing solutions

  • Apply testing, performance optimization, and secure coding practices

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and system reliability improvements

  • Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and other engineering teams to deliver solutions

  • Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to solution approaches

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers (including SE I)

  • Design components and services within established architecture, making independent technical decisions within defined patterns

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of backend systems and service-based architecture

  • Working knowledge of cloud environments and distributed systems

  • Understanding of system design principles and data modeling

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Java and backend development frameworks

  • Ability to:

    • Design and build RESTful APIs

    • Optimize system performance and scalability

    • Implement testing strategies and debugging techniques

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and production systems

Cognitive & Problem-Solving Abilities

  • Solves moderately complex technical problems independently

  • Navigates ambiguity within defined domains

  • Diagnoses root causes and implements effective solutions

Collaboration & Influence

  • Collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, QA)

  • Contributes to team-level improvements and engineering practices

  • Provides guidance and support to junior engineers

Execution & Ownership

  • Demonstrates accountability for end-to-end delivery outcomes

Education, Certification and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 2 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience
