The Role and Why It's Important

As the Coffee Lead at Hy-Vee, you'll help keep our Coffee Shop running smoothly while supporting the Department Manager and leading the barista team. You'll make sure every customer gets a fresh, high-quality product and a genuinely warm experience from the moment they walk up to the counter.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly, learning their names, and going the extra mile to make every visit a positive one

  • Take customer orders at the counter and over the phone, and assist with finding products and answering questions

  • Ensure food is handled safely and the work area is always clean, neat, and up to department standards

  • Monitor product freshness and appearance throughout your shift and prepare and replenish product as needed

  • Anticipate daily product needs and follow or develop a production list to stay ahead

  • Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed

  • Run the department register and process payments where applicable

  • Instruct, assign, and coordinate work for Coffee Shop Baristas

  • Order product and supplies as needed and price products for customers as necessary

  • Remove trash promptly and maintain a clean, organized department

  • Handle confidential information including sales percentages and employee wages with discretion

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, and Coffee Shop Department Manager

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and motivate your team to do the same

  • Solve practical problems and make sound decisions with a variety of variables

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Guide and support team members with clear direction and follow-through

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; food safety or sanitation courses encouraged; one year of similar or related experience preferred

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, and Coffee Shop Department Manager

Direct Reports: Coffee Shop Baristas

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Food safety or sanitation courses encouraged

  • One year of similar or related experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role in a coffee shop environment. You may frequently encounter cool temperatures, dampness, noise and vibrations from equipment, and daily exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. The role also involves working with and around food service equipment including slicers and choppers. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
