General Description Performs complex (journey-level) maintenance and troubleshooting work within a crime laboratory; Work involves preparing chemical compounds and solutions and working with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and combined DNA index system (CODIS); Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Examples of Work Performed Prepares acids, bases, reagents, blood-mailer tubes, and stock solutions Solicits bids on laboratory supplies Orders supplies and chemicals and maintains inventory and records Maintains clean and orderly laboratory vaults Delivers evidence to court when needed and may testify in court Performs maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment and hardware Assists with maintenance and evidence handling including receipt, storage, return, or destruction Assists with crime scene investigations Assists with instrument and inventory transfers and installs new or transferred equipment Performs related work as assigned Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Criminalistics or related field Two (2) years experience in laboratory work, law enforcement or related field Two (2) years of related experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education Certificates, Licenses and Registration: Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license Must be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrier Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of laboratory procedures and of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems Ability to prepare chemical compounds and solutions and to interpret and follow technical instructions
