Are you an experienced professional who enjoys turning technical expertise into better products? You'll mentor the Product Design Team in developing, maintaining, and improving standardized products, parts, and assemblies utilized across NBG's engineering teams. You'll collaborate across engineering, production, sales, purchasing, vendors, and customers to improve product performance and deliver safe, code-compliant, cost-effective solutions.
Basic Job Functions:
  • Initiate and drive the development and implementation of value-added new and/or enhanced Metal Building products, processes, and tools through collaboration across Nucor Buildings Group Divisions, Group Technology Services, and related Nucor businesses.
  • Prioritize value versus investments made in Product Design to improve or introduce new parts and products that are valuable to builders and easy to produce across all divisions.
  • Oversee technical evaluation of PEMB structural systems, connections, cladding systems, and ancillary components, identifying opportunities for optimization, cost reduction, and performance improvement.
  • Gather feedback and recommendations for potential areas of improvement in products and processes from Detailing, Customer Service, Design Engineering, Production, Sales, Purchasing, Vendors, and Customers.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of product corrections resulting from design issues, code changes, manufacturing concerns, and field feedback to ensure standardized products remain accurate, compliant, and effective across NBG Divisions.
  • Provide strategic and technical feedback and support to NBG Divisions and within Group Services to facilitate product and process improvements while promoting benchmarking, collaboration, and interdivisional alignment on product standards, tools, and processes.
  • Apply working knowledge of applicable building codes, load standards, and industry specifications (IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, MBMA) to guide product development decisions and ensure code compliance across the NBG product portfolio.
  • Coordinate with third-party testing laboratories and certification bodies to manage product qualification, testing protocols, and ongoing compliance requirements.
  • Direct the Product Design Team in maintaining internal reference materials, organizing and implementing value-added changes, and organizing and leading product training discussions.
  • Promote continuous development of the team through mentoring and coaching to help individuals realize and leverage their full potential.

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of PEMB (Pre-Engineered Metal Building) experience with demonstrated in-depth knowledge of PEMB structural systems, secondary structural members, roofing and wall systems, foundation interfaces, connections, and related components.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, load standards, and industry specifications, including IBC, ASCE 7, and AISC, as they apply to metal building systems.
  • Proficiency in engineering drawing interpretation, CAD software, electronic file management, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated PEMB industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), particularly given the oversight of R&D, product certification, and structural evaluation activities.
  • Advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • In-depth familiarity with the MBMA Metal Building Systems Manual, IBC structural provisions, AISC 360 (structural steel design), AISI S100 (cold-formed steel design), and applicable wind and seismic load standards.
  • Experience with product certification programs (e.g., FM Approvals, UL, ICC-ES) and processes for obtaining and maintaining certifications.
  • Hands-on experience with structural analysis software (e.g., RISA, STAAD, or proprietary PEMB design software), including an understanding of how design tools interface with product standards.
