What is coding?

A coding job involves writing, testing, and maintaining code to build software applications, websites, or systems. Coders, also known as programmers or developers, use programming languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript to create and optimize digital solutions. They work in various industries, including technology, healthcare, finance, and entertainment. Coding jobs may also involve debugging, collaborating with teams, and continuously learning new technologies to improve software performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in coding?

To excel in a coding role, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with code editors, version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications such as CompTIA or specific software credentials are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help coders stand out. These competencies ensure that coding professionals can develop reliable software solutions, collaborate efficiently with other team members, and adapt to evolving project requirements.

What are the main challenges someone new to a coding position might face?

Newcomers to coding positions often encounter challenges such as understanding complex codebases, debugging unfamiliar issues, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies. It's common to feel overwhelmed at first, especially when navigating large projects or collaborating with distributed teams. Asking questions, seeking mentorship, and leveraging resources like documentation and online communities can ease the transition. With time and experience, most coders become more comfortable handling these challenges and contribute effectively to their teams.

Are coding jobs still in demand?

Coding jobs remain in high demand across various industries as software development, data analysis, and cybersecurity skills are essential for digital transformation. Employers seek professionals proficient in programming languages like Python, Java, and JavaScript, often requiring certifications and experience with development tools. The job market for coders is expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

Is coding a good career?

Coding is a viable career that offers opportunities in software development, web development, data analysis, and more. It typically requires learning programming languages, problem-solving skills, and staying updated with technological advancements, making it a stable and in-demand profession in many industries.

Job description

Requisition ID: 259821ย
Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

Contributes to the overall success of the Global Information Security and Control division, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.ย  Ensures all activities conducted adhere to governing regulations, internal policies.

The Role:
The Senior Cloud Engineer, Infrastructure as Code within Cloud Platform Engineering at Scotiabank Canada is a senior individual contributor role focused on accelerating and enabling enterprise-wide cloud adoption through strong engineering practices, reusable infrastructure patterns, and cross team collaboration.

This role is aligned under the Cloud Product organization and operates horizontally across Cloud Engineering verticals rather than being embedded in a single focus delivery team. You will work across Azure and GCP, integrating with multiple delivery models and closely working with the CIOaligned teams consuming our patterns to better help them operationalize secure, scalable, and compliant Cloud solutions. You will help to bridge gaps with CIO teams, prioritizing and meeting their needs that in turn improves cloud platform engineering reach and adoptability.

Rather than owning a single platform, service, or execution lane, Senior Cloud Engineers in this role are expected to apply sound engineering judgment across a variety of problem spaces; balancing standards, delivery realities, and evolving platform capabilities.

What You'll Do:

Cross Platform Enablement

  • Integrate with multiple cloud delivery initiatives across Azure and GCP.
  • Support internal teams consuming cloud platforms by providing guidance on infrastructure design, deployment patterns, and operational best practices.
  • Operate effectively across varied delivery models without being tied to a single backlog or pipeline.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

  • Develop, extend, and support the adoption of reusable Terraform modules, cloud and DevOps patterns across the enterprise.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in existing cloud foundations, onboarding workflows, shared infrastructure pipelines, and tenant consumables.
  • Apply practical engineering judgment to improve IaC solutions to meet unique CIO needs while maintaining compatibility with existing environments.

Governance & Compliance Support

  • Contribute to the evolution of policyascode and governance mechanisms (e.g., HashiCorp Sentinel, Open Policy Agent).
  • Support regulated cloud environments, including the creation and enhancement of cloud platform landing zones to achieve PCI and other compliance frameworks.
  • Help ensure governance controls are effective, scalable, and adoptable by delivery teams.

Developer Experience and CI/CD Contributions

  • Participate in both traditional virtual machine and containerbased platforms development and adoption, including self-service consumable patterns and internally managed as a service Kubernetes offerings.
  • Contribute to CI/CD workflows and automation supporting infrastructure and platform delivery (e.g., GitHub Actions).
  • Identify common failure patterns and contribute improvements that increase reliability and developer experience.

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing

  • Collaborate closely with Principal Engineers across cloud domains to align solutions with platform standards and product direction.
  • Share knowledge through documentation, design discussions, demos, and code reviews.
  • Provide informal mentorship and guidance to other engineers when working across teams.

ย

What You'll Bring:

  • Strong handson experience with Terraform and shared IaC codebases.
  • Experience with Kubernetes patterns (Helm, Kustomize, ArgoCD/Flux).
  • Practical experience across Azure and GCP, supporting VM, Kubernetes and other cloud-native workloads.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure CI/CD and cloud governance in regulated environments.
  • Comfort operating in brownfield environments and improving platforms incrementally.
  • Comfortable working independently on complex ambiguous problems and collaborating across organizational boundaries to solve them.
  • Demonstrated technical credibility and the ability to influence outcomes through collaboration rather than formal authority
  • Selfdirected, with the ability to ramp up quickly and operate independently

ย

Working Conditions

Work in standard office-based environments located in Scarborough and Downtown Toronto; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. No external travel required.
