Job description

Position Summary

The MEP Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems throughout the planning and construction phases of assigned projects. This position works closely with project managers, superintendents, design professionals, subcontractors, vendors, and owners to ensure MEP systems are properly coordinated, installed, tested, and completed according to the project plans, specifications, schedule, and quality standards.

The MEP Coordinator helps identify conflicts, resolve coordination issues, track submittals and RFIs, support field installation, and assist with system startup, commissioning, and project closeout.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and low-voltage plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate MEP activities with the project schedule and overall construction plan.
  • Lead or participate in MEP coordination meetings with subcontractors, design teams, and project personnel.
  • Review shop drawings, coordination drawings, BIM models, and equipment layouts for accuracy and constructability.
  • Identify system conflicts and work with the appropriate parties to develop timely solutions.
  • Coordinate equipment locations, access requirements, ceiling layouts, utility connections, penetrations, sleeves, and structural supports.
  • Track MEP submittals, RFIs, design clarifications, long-lead equipment, and material deliveries.
  • Assist project management with procurement planning and identification of long-lead MEP equipment.
  • Monitor MEP subcontractor performance, manpower, progress, and compliance with the project schedule.
  • Conduct field observations to verify installations are consistent with approved drawings, specifications, codes, and quality requirements.
  • Document deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with subcontractors and project leadership.
  • Support inspections with code officials, engineers, commissioning agents, and owner representatives.
  • Coordinate equipment startup, testing, balancing, controls integration, commissioning, and owner training.
  • Assist with change order reviews, pricing evaluations, and scope verification for MEP-related work.
  • Maintain accurate records of coordination decisions, field changes, inspections, testing, and system completion.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of punch lists, as-built drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, and closeout documents.
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Build positive working relationships with owners, subcontractors, design professionals, vendors, and project team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architectural engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Three or more years of experience coordinating MEP systems in commercial construction preferred.
  • Equivalent field experience with a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or general contractor may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of commercial HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, building automation, and low-voltage systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and coordination documents.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing, building codes, inspections, testing, and commissioning procedures.
  • Experience with BIM and MEP coordination processes preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management software.
  • Experience with programs such as Procore, Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Navisworks, or Revit is preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with field personnel, subcontractors, design professionals, owners, and project leadership.
