Position Overview
SML is seeking a Special Inspector Level 1 to join its Phoenix team. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to build a long-term career in construction inspection and materials testing.
In this role, you will perform field inspections and testing services to verify that construction work complies with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes. You will work closely with project teams and gain hands-on exposure across multiple disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform field inspections on construction sites, including:
    • Reinforced concrete (pre-pour and placement observation)
    • Structural masonry
    • Basic structural steel inspections (bolting/welding observation)
  • Verify compliance with:
    • Approved construction documents
    • Local codes and industry standards (IBC, ACI, etc.)
  • Conduct materials testing as needed (soil, concrete, etc.)
  • Prepare daily field reports documenting:
    • Work performed
    • Observations and findings
    • Non-compliance issues and corrective actions
  • Communicate effectively with:
    • Contractors and superintendents
    • Engineers and project managers
    • Internal SML team members
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and safety awareness on active job sites

Qualifications
Required
  • 0-3 years of experience in:
    • Construction, inspections, or materials testing
  • Experience in soils testing
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to work outdoors in various job site conditions
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Preferred
  • Certifications (or ability to obtain quickly):
    • ATTI certification
  • Familiarity with:
    • International Code Council standards
    • American Concrete Institute testing procedures
